Picked up a bargain cam shaft today.

Think I'll pop in and see how it goes for the last couple of races for the year.

TT 8V Solid Lifter Camshaft (306 - RACE)

TT Race Solid Lifter Cam 306°, .443" lift, 265° duration @ .050", 105 Lobe centers, Will work w/CIS, Chilled Harden billet. Will work with standard lifters.
The cam that's in there at the moment is a big but a but a bit of a mystery. It's also pretty worn and a re-grind. This new one should be interesting.

I decided to upgrade the catch can.

The extra breather dumped a heap of oil into the old can and I discovered it doesn't seal up too well any more.

All the rattling around eventually took it's toll on my improvised can I guess.

I've mounted a new one on the other side of the bay and re-routed the lines, making the front one more vertical to try and stop oil getting pumped up it.

The new can is straight from the rice section of eBay and is 2 litres to meet CAMS regs.

It's better mounted than the old one with a re-enforcing plate inside the guard, the scrutineers seemed to like jiggling the old one around a bit too much.

It's run to the plate that's blocking off the hole where the fuel pump would be on a 1600.

The 2.0 s have a factory breather box on there.

Tried to fit the new cam today. As luck would have it I don't have enough of the right sized shims. Will have to pick some up during the week.

Two of the shims are stuck in the buckets too and no amout of convincing is going to get them out of there. I'll need two new lifters as well.

    Question on the catch can,
How does that setup work? im assuming the factory setup uses the intake air to help suck vapors and bits of oil to reburn for pollution crap.
Now that you have just two hoses from your breather points, to the catch can then mini filter, wouldnt the oil just glug up around the bases of hoses?

or am i over thinking it? want to run one in mine as the later Mk3 block has a crank breather like yours, and just thinking it be easier to run a catch can

Mostly it's just vapours and a bit of oil. Ideally there shouldn't be anything in the can except a bit of condensation from when the motor's cold.

With your breather you can just cut off the steel pipe coming out of the box and put a mini filter straight on that and another right on the rocker cover.

I run a catch can because the race regs demand it where the factory breather system can't be used.

For my capacity motor the catch can has to be able hold 2.0 litres.

The oil won't glug up anywhere it'll just run back down to the lowest point it can once the motor's off.

Here's some shots I took last weekend pulling the old cam out and sizing up the new one.

New cam at the top, the lobes seem a bit wider. Haven't bothered to measure that.

Side by side, New on the left.

Much better base circle diameter, biiiig duration!

Only just clears the lifter bore, any closer and it would have to be clearanced.

Good job the valves and springs are set-up for big lifts. Will have to take a few measurements and make sure everything is going to play nice in there.

I've got the shims I need to set it up now thanks to Chris at precision Shims,

PRECISION SHIMS AUSTRALIA | INLET SHIMS | EXHAUST SHIMS | VALVE SHIMS

so I might get this working this weekend.

In other news I'm collecting the wavetrac equipped gearbox from repairs tomorrow, so I'll be able to get that back in before the next outing, Sandown on Cup day.

Good one Pete, the new cam should have a great effect on the performance.

Can't wait to see it in action.
