Nice work Pete, that was a quick engine pull out!![]()
It's out now!
I'll work on swapping the head tomorrow. I need to pull it apart first and just give it a clean, and check the lifter clearances. (It's a mech cam).
Decided to hang it on the stand off the back of the block. Just means I don't have to pull the clutch off.
That casting on top of a 5 speed is conveniently right at the centre of gravity which lets you pick the box off the end of the motor without any back strain.
The serpentine belt setup has held up to a year of racing no worries.

Not so quick, I've been timed at 12 minutes to remove the engine from my old splitty Kombi.
I did go to the movies for 4 hours yesterday too.
This motor's a bit fiddly to take out though as there's lots of non standard stuff on it that has to be disconnected or that fouls when you're trying to remove it.
Practice helps too.

looking good
Where does one get a serpentine belt setup? i like the look of it
And i take it the Alternator is a higher amp then stock Mk1?
<space for rent>
Just easier to remove as an assembly. I also wanted to go over everything before it goes out on the track again. Found a few loose nuts and clamps and stuff that I wouldn't have spotted otherwise.
All I'm up to this time 'round is head, box and bigger chokes in the carbs, but it's never that simple of course. I spent a couple of hours today match porting the inlet manifold to the new head.

You make one out of MK3 stuff. Here's how
http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newf...ght=serpentine
Alternator is a MK3 90 Amp unit, about double the output of a MK1.
MK1 race cars tend to snap the standard alternator mounting brackets.

I might have a new one here in a box.
I'm going to need a new outer CV boot, hopefully I can can find one locally tomorrow so I can change it while the motor's out.
Pete
I don't need it.
You can have it mate.
Not sure if it is inner or an outer though. Will check.
cheers,

Carbs aren't so much of an issue. The extractors are one piece right back to the gearshift and they're clamped, not flanged so they're impossible to remove.
Of course the extractors foul the inlet manifold too and it takes an hour to unbolt all of that.
The alternator setup overhanges the the front chassis rail which stops me removing the motor downwards.
The lower stress bar has to come out, and there's a remote oil cooler to contend with.
There's just a lot of stuff to contend with.
