I'm still in love with the Renesis rotary engine.
In the RX8, the compact size of the rotary means that the engine sits low and is right next to the firewall. The engine location also means that its behind the front axle line.
Engine is also super smooth all the way to 9750 revs. IT sux on fuel consumption though.
It is not the quickest car in a straight line, however it can keep up with cars with 2 to 3 times the engine capacity on track (laptime). In a track like Winton, it goes extremely well.
German invention in a Japanese car. Sounds like a great combination.
Anything's possible with the right amount of money!
Do it FR. Hack up the engine bay, make a trans tunnel down the middle of your floorpan, be prepared to have a sump lower than just about everything else!
It would be worth it I think. Mr. Wankel would certainly be proud.

the rotary is a unique engine. many have tried to graft this engine into aircraft with varied success. some have even spent the dollars to certify this engine. They rev like crazy and are often described as a cross between the piston and the turbine engine as they have an almost circular motion in the rotors.
In the end all development ended with the same hurdle, BSFC. The sad fact is that the most efficient piston gasser engine will still use .5 lb/BHP/hour. The rotary uses more because the fuel/ flame front is still burning as the fuel air mixture gets pushed out the exhaust.
If you want the the horsepower in a small car go and buy a rx3/808 coupe and save yourself heaps of grief. Don't take my word for it I am extremely biased, why would you put a rotary into a subframe that will accept the most efficient engine combination there is FWD diesel? Still kicking prius arse in MPG and initial cost.
If you buy a mid 90's second hand diesel you really kick prius arse for MPG and outright cost

A Mk6 Golf and a MY10 Audi A3 Sportback due to be delivered 3rd week of October. Both are diesels. Funny thing is, both rpms combined on the tacho = 10000 rpm which is what the RX8's got. Hmmm... also the combined fuel consumption figure for both car will be less than the RX8 sucks in!
RX8 is a joy to fang around in. Ohhh... it has not much torque, but the close ratio gearbox makes up for it and an engine that just wants to rev free. At 9750+ revs... there isn't any engine vibrations at all - it is super smooth!!!! The gear stick at those revs are stationary!
Also, I miss the low-mid range grunt which the RX8 was lacking. Turbo diesel made sense to me.
i have considered this conversion into my mk2 jetta. the idea of a rotor vdub is sweet but there would be a lot of work involved. so i bought myself a mazda 1000 ute. best of both worlds, vw jetta soon to be vr6(hopefully awd, s/c) and a rotor ute with awesome power to weight.
