yeah something is not right , you shouldnt get pinging with a stock 1600 are you sure the fueling is right sounds like there is more power to be had there.

well we did everything..... but its sorted now, its just stale fuel thats making it ping now
i recon yours will sound better, but at least mines running!
i recon the valve stem seals are gone as some white smoke farts out when i really get up it. Who cares, gives me an excuse to do some head work to the other pre emissions head lying around the workshop.... big valves and some porting anyone?

so how does it go now with the timing in the right spot, as quick as a 1.8l bottom end ?

that might be because the head is a 1.6l not a 1.8l head, also 2 up is always slower

Good to hear you had some help from Pete & Nick.
Did Nick tune the weber by ear & feel?
Stale fuel will alway's be a killer on performance for sure. Get some good fuel in it & maybe advance the timing a tiny bit & see how it goes.
With the cam advanced it would have had some nice bottom end poke. Well it should have had.
I'm sure if it was a 1.8L it would have gone pretty hard even with a 1.6L head, as the compression should be higher. It should be faster than my stocky GX 1.8L.
I think Bill from memory built a 1830+cc 8v using the 1.6 head & it flew.
