The split type seperate shock/spring was unique to the Typ 32 Passat and Australian assembled Typ 82 Fox, the German assembled Fox had 'coilover' same as the B2.
I use custom rear springs and Gabriel Red Ryder Gas, and soon to be fitted 'Bilstein B6' front cartridge to complement the larger 20mm front swaybar. Bilstein part is used on all Audi 80 chassis upto B4. For front air conversion see the thread on B1 owners group forum site http://dog.mp3equipped.com/dog/. A few people on that forum use Volvo 740 rear springs which firm things up..

Love it mate! My Dad had one that age in the late 70', then an 81' GLD till 2000, which had quad round headlamps and a different rear end, such a nice car, even if it was gutless.
And yours looks like a timewarp!
