We have long weekend here and so this is my progress today! Been successful and I will be welding it all up tomorrow. The brake system is all mounted up under the bonnet and the RHD rack will go in tomorrow. Everything is in there at the moment to check for alignment.

Hi Chris, I managed to pick up an 83 private import GLS last monday so I have everything I need from that car. Its a pity it wasnt injected as it would have made the wiring a lot easier!
The firewall is a different shape on the RHS where the steering shaft boot attaches so it involves fitting the section from the donor car. Speedo cable, clutch cable, accellerator cable, brake linkage on the RHS all need holes drilled. The steering column support needs welding as does the small support bracket down near the brake linkage in the engine bay. Dash mountings were different and had to be welded in and of course, the steering rack!! I suppose its taken me 7 hours to get this far but to weld it all up wont take long. I spent a lot of time measuring and trial fitting stuff.
Thanks too mate, I forgot the accelerator pedal, pffft, who needs it??
The firewall is a slightly different shape where the bracket goes so thats another job to do tomorrow.
And fit the wiring harnesses too.....

Sounds like one big headf*ck to me, Andrew!

Doing a job like this (properly) takes talent and brains.. So I'm going to use this emoticon to show how i feel...

    Good luck with the rest!

I honestly don't know how you find spare time to carry out this sort of work Andrew.

    Awesome progress!

Thanks Tim and Chris, normal thing, if something needs to be done then its a case of doing it. I lost motorvation for a little while but its back at the moment so i have to make an effort. Once the weather cools down it should be easier too. we have been spared the hot weather this weekend so that has helped. The rack is in and the firewall hole is lined up perfectly as is the universal joints on the steering shaft. Now for some welding.
I think the hardest thing to do now apart from the wiring is drilling 2 speedo cable holes which will be tricky. By the way the clutch cable hole in the 83 model ji reinforced. They should have done that from the start.

Looking good Andrew, it's supprising how much you can get done with no interuptions - Did you hide the GTI in the work shop this time away from passing traffic?
