Took the block down to my mate Andy today. Should have it back next week. It will be torqueplate bored and honed and will also have the main caps fitted and torqued.. So the bore should be as true as possible when assembled..![]()
Maybe. We'll see how I go. I'm pretty sure i have all the bits now. It will take me a bit I think. I'm pretty pedantic. I want to have everything clean and painted or what ever as I go so that when assembled, it's like a new engine.![]()

Cool, how are you handling advance? Headed down the Saab route?
I was looking at using the statically timed 16v dizzy with electronic ignition system with programmable advance.
Something like this Multi Function Ignition Controller - 8979 in line with your ignition.

Yes that's something that's on my mind. I was hoping to use some type of OEM module (not fussed if it isn't VW!) with a set advance curve to start, before i went playing around with programmable stuff.. But i may just buy the MSD controller.
This has got me worried: VWvortex Forums: Give it to me straight... How long do I have..
Looks like i will be buying a new set of bearings with the OEM type 6 piece thrust bearing. I'm not going to chance it.

Ouch...... all happening in <4k miles so not a big window. Good form, 50US or something for the bearings, definitely worth it![]()

& in hindsight, I really should have used one of these ignition controllers over my 6AL BTM (boost retard) & they are also only approx $20US more than the setup I got(ignition box only! Then add in the coil, coil bracket, leads, lead separators, RPM Pills etc.) & then would have total control over the entire ignition instead of just using the stock mechanical advance & pulling timing out for boost only.
If your serious, the best place to get is JEGS I reckon.
I ordered all my ignition stuff on a Monday night Aussie time & it arrived Thursday Aussie time!
Can't argue with that kind of service!
