i reckon you should have opted for 12:1 those 1600 twin cam berg cup cars run over 13.5:1 comp and they only run 109 ron fuel

I reckon 11:1 is good, cause it'll be 100% streetable. it's going to be grumpy enough with the big cams, tiwn carbs, and head work. I reckon go much more than that, and you'd end up loosing that 100% streetability. imo atleast

yes, it'd be nice to have 13:1, but the practicality of it. not so great.

The highest we could go is 10.5-1.

Yes but they are running that comp with bigger cams (way bigger) and heads that flow 5 bagillion CFM, so they have the overlap to cool the chamber. That's why they can get away with it. 109ron is way different (read: better) to OUR 98. Fuel in Australia has improved majorly, but it's still crap.

One thing I noticed with my 16vt is it is really resistant to detonation. When I had it dyno-tuned the operator was actually surprised, he found that if he advanced the ignition too far he would start losing power yet would not ping. I don't think I have ever had a ping out of it.

I'm running only 9:1 compression but it's turbo-ed. I only use 98RON, I have used 95 once or twice though. When I ported the head I polished up the combustion chambers which would help prevent any hot spots that may cause detonation, but still they must be an ok head design with regard to detonation if not ideal for flow. You may have more leeway to go decent comp pistons. Besides ABF's run 10.8:1 factory.

Now that's the kind of thing i like to read.. A post by someone with actual experience! Thank you!

I've been thinking about it and the 16v chamber is open with pretty much no squish area, which means that it should be less susceptible to hot spots and indeed detonation. My combustion chambers are also polished so i shouldn't have a prob as far as that goes either.

The issue i have is that if i go too high i'll have problems.. If i go with 11:1 i'll have good power with no hassles. I mean, if i go to 11.5 or so, it's only going to mean 5 or 6 hp anyway. I'm not sure whether it's worth considering this is unknown territory for me at the moment.

No worries mate, I think at the end of the day a fresh 16v with 11:1 compression ratio is going to be a very angry motor, especially with side-draughts. The sound is just going to be insane.

My Dad runs 13.5 on 98 pump fuel in his 1.6ltr 16v. The pistons were made here locally in Knoxfeild. Guy is a legend, very helpful and well priced. Would you like me to ask my Dad his details and price etc?

EFI and engine management though.. Which makes a lot of difference. Hold back on that as i've got a few things in the works at the moment.
