That was part of my Yr12 Physics exam...
Oscilloscope: a type of electronic test instrument that allows signal voltages to be viewed, usually as a two-dimensional graph of one or more electrical potential differences (vertical axis) plotted as a function of time or of some other voltage (horizontal axis).
Geeeeeeeezzzzzzzz im gooooooooooddddddd![]()
Haha James, but I do know what an os-silly-scope is. I'm supposedly being an engineer remember
Pete, this was the reason for checking the current:
Actually, I did it wrong anyway, so ignore that anyway.
Should I try that spare alternator that you gave me, and see if the AC V drops down?
Yep.
Also look for voltage drops with that shiny new DMM.
Check the voltage between the body of the alternator and the -ve terminal of the battery for example. It should be 0.0v. If it's anything else, start replacing earth straps and cleaning contacts until it's 0.0v

Swapped the alternators this morning (afternoon really)
Took these measurements.
Old alt.
car off: 12.27V
car running: 13.6V(--) (slowly increasing) and 29.3 V(~)
'New' Alt.
Car off: 12.29V
Car running 14.2V(--) and 30.9V(~).
So the new alt is stronger, but the V(~) didn't change drastically.
I've just gone out and check the Voltage between the alt body and -ve terminal and it was 0.07V (--), so after lunch I'm going to go out and checking the earths. I might even buy some new straps etc.
I'm also planning on taking the batt to where I bought it, to get it checked, as I bought it about 355 days ago. Hopefully if it's damaged at all, I can get a new one under warranty.
