    Mk 1 5 speed conversion

    Hello all,

I have all the bits for a 5 speed conversion except for the speedo cable. The 5 speed box came with the gearbox end of the old cable, and the speedo drive gears are red. Any idea where i can get the right speedo cable in oz? If not, can i have the red drive gears grafted onto another cable?

This website details the difference between the red, white and green speedo drive gears:

Have a look at your gearbox code, looking at the web page you posted will tell you what colour gear you need. the gear will come of the cable with a tug.

Last year I bought home some scirocco 2 cables from UK and had the local speedo joint remove the plastic clip type speedo end and crimp on a thread end type.

    Was an expensive excersise tho...

    Scirocco cable 76156. long....
    Lots of MK 1 Scirocco's...

If it aint a MK 1 then it must be a donor car ??

    Cheers,

I pulled the red gear off the end of the severed cable and it fits onto the end of a spare cable that i have so i think the problem is sorted!

    Speedo cable

You will probably find the white speedo drive is OK unless you have extra tall tyres. I have a white drive in my 5sp with 15 inch wheels 195 50 15s and the GPS says the speedo is spot on.
