    can't be done says tim. weld up the water jacket? hehe

    good to see some loving going in to a cool coloured mk1.

    are you going to run the 8v on k-jet?

    Yeah, running k-jet system on the 8v.

    Only if you've got a hard on facination with 1.6L Herons.

    I don't. Prefer going for larger displacement anyday.

    There is no replacement for displacement.

    Even if it is only 1.8L! whoooooooooo.


    82.5mm is stock 2L pistons.

    You'd also want to double check the Piston Pin heights too! As the 2L had longer Rods!

    This may put the pistons down the bore (with increased deck height/more clearance volume = less compression!) if you plan on using a 1.8L crank & 144mm rods

    I wish it was that easy. But its not.

    Even if you grout filled the block it wouldn't cope with an overbore that much!

    The 83.5mm overbore is still 0.098" Thou & is very much on/over the ragged edge!

    The max I've always been taught is 0.060" max over bore on nearly every motor.

    But VW bore linings must be thick, as a 83mm bore (0.079" over bore) is run of the mill stuff.


    Once you go through the lining, welding, grout filling, or even pissing in it won't make any difference.

    A cyl. lining is a lining. Once its gone. Thats the end of it, if its part of the block. (unless you re-sleeve it, or come up with some hair brained idea to convert a 85+mm removable iron lining out of another manufacturers block!) haha

    Its all checked Tim. We dummy fitted to rods and pistons and on TDC, the pistons his goes just over the block deck. We still need to measure the TDC, but we will do that when we get more progress done in the engine.

    Were not using 144mm rods, our rods are longer then 144mm but shorter then 159mm.

    Well I'm very interested your engine spec!

    Cause to go to 1.9L you only need a 83mm piston using the stock 1.8L crank & 144mm rod

    If your pistons are too far out of the deck & the headgasket isn't thick enough, then its into the head quench & possibly valves! BANG!



    Don't know of another rod inbetween 144mm (1.8L) & 159mm (2.0L) for the VW engine! Even then it would need custom pistons for the pin heights.

    Had to go with longer rods cause of the pin position on the 2lt piston.

    Pistons don't go over the deck that much....only a few mm. Ill have to get pic's once everything is put in.

    Still doesn't make sense to me though.

    Instead of having expensive custom(overkill) rods made, you could have got a much cheaper set of high quality 83mm (1870cc) or even 82.5mm (1847cc) pistons at nearly half the cost & not upsetting your rod/stroke ratio!

    Horses for courses

    Just be careful with pistons out of the block!

    A few mm may not seem like much, but 3mm is 0.118" thou & a normal headgasket is only 0.040" thou. The piston will still knock on the head!

    Dad doesn't like building his engines with stock rods. Number for reasons, weight, strength etc..
    But the rods really aren't that expensive as you may see it, under 1k. We didn't go with the custom pistons because this engine was budget build and he didn't want to build his 16v itb motor on a 2L bottom end, so might aswell get the rods now and use them on the 8v as well.

    Dad will explain to you everything in person next time you guys see each other. Its a little complicating over the net.

    What i dont get it why not just throw in a 16v if your spending all that money.

    Wouldnt a stock 2L 16v make just as much power as the 8v you're building or better yet slap on a trubo haha?
