    Engine rebuild or swap?

The other day the car started running like a dog. Juddering and hesitating under load. I took it to the mechanic and much to my dismay, it had been running on three cylinders due to oil fouling a spark plug and stopping it from firing.

Long story short I'm up for an engine rebuild quoted 3000-4000 dollars. I'm on my p's for 2 years yet so an gti engine swap is out of the question but would it be possible to do a vr6 swap (and corresponding upgrades) for similar money to the rebuild?

The car is a 2001 Mk4 golf 2.0 manual with 90000 on the clock.

    Mods:

    Whiteline RSB - adjustable
    B&M Short shifter
    Superpro dogbone
    Superpro FSB bushes
    Remus Cat-back
    Smoothed Stock Intake
    Phillips blue bulbs
    Audi TT wheels

    Your thoughts are much appreciated.

PM golf loon, he'll probably have a replacement engine at a fraction of that price!

I do have an engine, but also get a second opinion as maybe it is another issue and yuor can be saved.
