Brake upgrades for Mk1

Hi fellow vdubbers, have any of you carried out brake upgrades on mk1 golf?
Not just performance pads but real stoppers to compensate for big hp and to use in racing applications. any info would be appreciated wether it is something that can be retro fitted from another vw or audi, seat etc. or brakes from performance aftermarket type setup.

A bigger master cylinder and servo is a good start. MK2 items being easyish to obtain, Passats have the same stuff fitted if you find one.

The disks and pads depend on what you have fitted to start with. On a GTI you can space the caliper to fit 280 G60 disks. Not sure about lesser models as I have never run one.

I think some early to mid 80 Audis had 256mm brakes which will go on mk1 hubs.

With 256 you are going to need 14 inch wheels, with 280s you are up to 15s minimum.

thanks for reply,would definitely be looking for 270/280mm discs and calipers, even some 4 pot calipers to suit.Am using mk2 booster but have not done master cylinder yet.Am going to add some serious hp so i need stoppers.

A mate of mine has a Turbo Technics MK1 with 175hp that he runs on std GTI brakes. I think he is mental but it does stop OK, just doens't feel like modern brakes.
How much power do you think you'll be ending up with?

Due to the fact that i want to use it for a variety of competition,and not knowing exactly what engine i will use,i suppose hp figures are a bit way off yet. But i am a big believer in having more brakes than u need rather than less.
I was reading in a gti book about one conversion that uses hubs,280mm disks and calipers from Passat 88-92 but i think this may be an English or European model. As yet i dont know if this model is in Australia

Christ I was scrubbing huge speeds with 239's using decent pads and fluid at the Island. Still have the mk2 - 239 set-up. Anyones for a case of Stella!

All this stuff is available, you just need to look around for it ( overseas web sites )

Will be ordering some 280 front discs very shortly..

You could use some cailper brackets,
I bought some from Ridgeway racing in the uk, They space the original caliper out so you can fit G60 280mm discs, very simple to fit, only hard bit is you need to machine 1mm of the pads.
You will also need 15" rims to clear the calipers.
These brackets fit all mk1 Golfs and early mk2 Golfs with 76mm spacing between caliper carrier bolt holes, I havnt fitted mine yet but ive been told these make a huge difference

I also have caliper brackets which allow the fitment of Porsche boxster 4pot Brembo calipers to mk1 Golfs and early Mk2 Golfs, (only with 76mm spacing) these need 305mm discs from a Seat ibiza cupra r (4 stud) Part no 6KL 615 301 these bolt straight on, not sure if they are avaliable in aus?, and some different brake hoses. ive been told mk3 hoses will work?
but you will need at least 16" rims to clear the calipers.
If there is enough interest i may get both these brackets made up locally.
