    Mmmmm...

    take it to turbo tech and get them to check it out, maybe just need minor work to rectify it, but leave it and it has the possibility of causing major grief...
    Lots of MK 1 Scirocco's...

    If it aint a MK 1 then it must be a donor car ??

    mmm yea good point might do i think. It's not much of a scrape really and only on that one spot. There is about 0.5mm of play (side to side) if i really give it a firm wobble and then it just rubs on the side but still turns.
    Sounds quite possible it could be the heat expansion thing as Gavin mentioned?
    The foreman at Audi Centre Perth said some of these have lots of play in the turbine shaft. He's seen Q7 TDI turbo's with almost 1mm of movement in the turbine!! Well, i assume that's a lot anyway.
    But this turbo business is pretty new to me still and i'm learnin as i go, so to be safe i'll get it checked by a specialist.

    I wouldn't worry about that - I have two new Garretts here and both of them have a fraction of rubbing against the housing Once the wheel is at full speed, it'll centre itself and won't rub anyway.

    Yeah they have a fair bit of play when idle.

    once oil is forcing its way through the bearing case under pressure, it centers the shaft - one of the reasons you need a tip top oil system for a turbo engine.
