Yep, I could have built one but as I'm always short of time this was a much quicker option. I'll be able to use it on the beetle too and they keep their resale value.

Here's some pics of the "AutoTwirler" as the assembly instructions call it.

I was hoping to get the car up on it this weekend, but it was delivered missing one wheel (it's on it's way now) and the cross pieces are a little short to pick up the bumper locations.

I'll make new cross beams, it's just a 1.2m length of 3mm 50x50 RHS with some holes drilled in it.

I drilled the arms for the MK1 bumper iron mounts and welded nuts to the back of the tube so it just bolts up like a bumper.

Bumpers usually mount with M8 bolts, I've upped it to 12mm for this application.

    Some progress.

After way too long we extracted the blue golf from the pile of rubble that had grown around it since we had it out last.

It's over on the other side of my garage now so I can get some work done on it.

    Today -

    • Removed wiring from engine bay
    • Removed rain tray
    • Removed battery tray
    • Removed brake booster and linkages.
    • Removed tar matting from rain tray area.
    • Removed wiper mechanism.
    • Removed windscreen
    • Removed front guards
    • Pulled some other stuff out too....

All looking pretty good so far, only a few minor rust spots under the matel I removed and a very good windscreen area.

Yep can lift 2000lbs so you could lift a golf with the motor still in it!

Both ends are the same and you can rotate it and lock it at any angle.

I'll be seam welding this so it'll save me a lot of grief getting into all the areas.
