It was a fun day out at the Geelong Revival.

The Golf generated lots of interest.

The car's not really that well suited to standing start events like this because of the high (2.3) first gear.

Getting off the line I could spin the wheels but it bogged down until I could get the revs on board.

Amazingly consistent despite my improving technique and increasing terminal velocity.

Here's the times for the 4 runs

    0:14.4854
    0:14.2718
    0:14.1679
    0:14.1530

And some pictures from the event.

Les than one minute of track time for the day and about 10 hours of this.

Even had D|ck Johnson come by and take a peek.

    Looks like a good day!

How are the Tarox holding up Peter?
Do they use a Tarox specific pad or a generic size (like stoptech use porsche style pads)?
...and was it an off the shelf kit?

Tarox brakes are awesome, I'm still on the first set of pads.

This is the KMVW0464 280x22 kit to suit MK2 as my car has modified MK2 16v uprights. I'm running the 116 (Track) pads.

I'm not sure if the pads are common to other models. EBC makes pads for these though and it' s easy enough to get the genuine ones from Tarox.

Great to see you had a good weekend, not sure about the time value for 1 min running to 10 hours though!

Had a message from an acquaintance, (a mate of my mate) who does a lot of racing with these in the UK, he kind of knows his stuff, working for a little company called McLaren and all that, any way he gets just over 220 from his, and said the Group A F2 cars "really" only got 250 from the factory and that was a short life motor
Your 135 wheels would be 180hp, so probably 210-220 flywheel, which puts you on the "real" money, as opposed to the salesmen's spiel. Got my calcualtor out and you are at 12.2 Bar BMEP, which is basically better than most people ever achieve, it is rare for a 4 valve to crack any where near 13, usually only dedicared race motorss (ie F1 V8's were at 14.5) and 2 valve spec motors like NASCAR and V8 taxi's at mid 13's
So the only way to step it up is holding the torque with more revs, = shorter life, and for that you will need more cam = crap power curve

13.5 will work with E85, probably not as good a 105 which has oxygen content, but 1/4 the price for 99.9% of the result (ie you may gain a fraction here but loose it there)

Yeah, drag racing's not for me! Not nearly enough track time and nowhere near enough corners.

I'm happy running the 105, the E85 worries me a bit in terms of upgrading the fuel system. I'd need a new fuel tank and lines for starters, everything else is e85 compatible.

The last dyno run was educational.

On the previous tune I'd set a rev limit of 8000 RPM as the motor was new and the oiling system unproved. I ran it like that until now.

The motor's built to survive 10,000 rpm so we upped the limiter for this tune so I could find out where the power stopped.

We discovered that the injectors I had fitted were too small and that they were 100% at 7000RPM.

They were Bosch redtops, about 30lb/hr, 350cc. We upgraded them to Siemens 63 lb/hr 646cc injectors which are E85 compatible and have sufficient capacity for E85 should I ever head down that path.

Now power's available to about 9500RPM so that's where I've set the rev limit now.

Another learning from the Dyno is that stock 100mm CV boots don't survive 240km/hr. At those speeds they grow to about double their size. They can stay inflated too, at least until the heat from the exhaust manifold pops them.

I've ordered Aero CV boots for the inners, they're used on various formula cars so should hold up OK so long as I don't have too much suspension articulation.

    (Yay, my first F1 parts!)

The outers I'm sort of stuck with stock CV boots but the suggestion there is to put O rings into the valleys on the boot to limit swelling.

I also melted a hand brake cable on the dyno which locked a rear wheel up until we figured out what was going on and disconnected that cable.

It melted in 2 places, inside the steel tube in the floor pan and inside the flexible sheath where it passes under the exhaust.

I did have fibreglass insulation on it, but it wasn't enough. I've made that triple layer now and I'll have to make up a couple of heat shields for the body tubes.

Just as a matter of interest Pete, what was your terminal velocity at Geelong?

Technically, this was a sprint, not a drag race so the official timing only includes elapsed time between start and finish.

I did glance down at the speedo as I crossed the line though and I was doing about 160km/hr. I haven't had a look at the data logs yet.

The wifi controller for the GoPros was acting up so I only got footage of the first 2 runs.

Pretty sure I grabbed 5th instead of third in the second run.
