Dropped the shell and panels off for paint stripping today.

It's getting tanked, the process will take about a week and it will remove all the paint, bog, seam sealer, glue and body deadener all in one go.

The body goes in a caustic tank which then gets heated up and stays in there for about a week.

The loose panels go in the same tank, but go into a de-rusting solution too as a second step.

    Off for a bath.

Left the roof bows in until the last minute.

Ever wondered where the centre of gravity is on a 2 door shell?

    Bath time!

With cup day next week it'll probably be bout 2 weeks before I get the car back completely naked, in bare metal.

The goal is to get the rust repairs done the minute it gets back and get all the seam welding done asap so I can work on the bare metal before I have to undercoat it.

Once that's done it'll be off to the roll cage shop.

There's pros and cons to chemical stripping vs media blasting. This isn't for everyone and not something you'd want to do to a street or show car.

I should end up with the lightest possible starting point for a racing body shell.

Probably just going to stick with sprints and hill climbs. Nothing where there's much in the way of any special requirements.

The cage will be built to suit any class though in case things change in the future.

Hadn't really considered running improved production. I can always stick a rain tray back in there if the mood takes me later on.

Looks good pete, marty the guy that bought the cars over for Phillip island historics runs a hot caustic tank, still yet to plumb up a phosphating tank to treat the shell after the caustic. LMK how much there going to charge you as i was considering sending a few shells to a mob near wodonga.

    Paint Removal

And the reaal treatment UK style
Paint Stripping, Rust and Underseal Removal for Cars and Industry by Surface Processing Limited

Biggest issue is to neutralise the caustic and the phosphate before paint application.
    Lots of MK 1 Scirocco's...

If it aint a MK 1 then it must be a donor car ??

    Cheers,
    Grant...

Just got the news that the car will be ready for collection either Monday or Tuesday.

I've tee'd up some help to do the rust repairs to the floor and A pillar during the week and then it's off to Brown Davis on Friday for a rollcage.

In other news, the brakes arrived today. With the dollar so strong the timing was good to bring these in.

These are Corrado G60 twin pot calipers and will bolt straight up to the 16v MK2 hubs I'm going to use. The calipers are enormous!

Here's a pad compared to the pads I run now (16v Scirocco.)

    280mm Discs to suit.

What wheels have you got planned to fit those brakes? Are they GAP discs?
