no need to be short - it did "occur" to me they may be different - but who knows unless you actually look. admittedly, i havnt - but it was a suggestion of an idea, not a problem solver.
it wouldnt surprise me in the slightest if they did cross over/fit eachother.... i mean, the earlier 4 cylinder audi/vw engines are compatible across the gearboxes they share.
as well as that, i'm positive that if it were me doing the engineering, i'd rather make an adaptor plate and use the right gearbox, than bodge a awd system to do 2wd.
you ought not jump to the conclusion that someone is an imbecile, just because you may know something that they dont.

Thanks Aydan. Sensible comments there.
Yeah Mr bugracer, if hes built a spaceframe sand racer with a vr6 in it, an adaptor plate shouldnt be too difficult.
Gearbox bellhousing patterns may be similar anyway. T4 gearbox belhousing fits 5cyl engines like the audi has and also a vr6. Its not that big a stretch.

ok perhaps its still unclear
audi's run an north-south engine configuration, even with FWD. they use a transaxel gearbox, like an old beetle gearbox, but designed to drive the other way, ofcourse. this means you would be able to mount the engine north-south in the middle of your chassis, and the gearbox BEHIND it, and have everything work nicely.
you would probably require an adaptor plate between engine and gearbox to do this.
