Lightbulb Welcome to the Car Manuals / Glossary section

    Hi everyone!
Not everyone can find or afford a car manual for their Golf. So if we each use our digital cameras to photograph our car manuals and post them, we will have a decent database. We can avoid copyright issues by taking our own photos and I'm an electrical engineer and can draw up wiring diagrams for us. So please post em up or post em to themagician(at)gmail.com and I can translate them into a copyright-free format that can be kept here on public display permanently.

Also, as for a glossary, if you want to write up a message with a few acronyms I can cut and paste it into a dictionary style message. Nothing is too dumb, really.
    TDi - Turbo Diesel injection
ULSD - Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel.(brackieSays)It's Euro4standard.Nice to environment but destroys injection pump seals by shrinking'em.
    GLD - ??
GTI - ??(syncro says)Grande Tourissmo Injectionezzi (excuse the spelling)
If you can name 'em, please do!

Grand Tourer is what GT traditionally stands for. I means its injected.

Its a model thing, you didn`t get em all in Oz, but there was a Golf C, L, CL, GL, GLS, GLD, GTI and some others GLI

GLD is a GL model with a Diesel engine.

The different models had different size engines and interior specs.

    The Mk1 Golf in Europe had 950cc, 1L, 1.1L, 1.3, 1.5, 1.6, 1.7 and 1.8 engines.

There were 1.1L and 1.3L Mk2s as well.

    Diesels

The first diesels were 1.5 (the objective of their developers was to create a diesel with the same performance as the 1.1 petrol motor), then came the 1.6, the 1.6 turbo and then the 1.9 in both NA and turbo formats. The 1.9TDI came next followed by the 2.0 that appeared in the Mk5.

    Yep!

Originally there were 3 trim levels

Golf, Golf L, Golf GL (GTI from Italian for fast injected car was a base Golf)

S meant the larger engine, I was the injected engine and D for diesel.

Australia had LS (1.6 Australian made in 1976 only), GLS (1.6 German 1977-1980) and GLD (1.5 diesel 1978-1980)

After that with the second generation Golf 1 it became confusing with models like Golf N/CL/GLX etc. which Australia never got anyway until the Golf 2 GTI in 1990.

    German would be something like;

    Grosse Fahrt Einspritz or GFE

    GTI sounds much better.
