    F1 to Adopt Turbo 1.6-Litre V6s, not 4-Cylinders, from 2014


    It seems that Formula 1’s rules that were supposed to take effect from the 2013 season are being scrapped before they are even imposed. Those regulations called for the replacement of today’s 2.4 V8 motors by 4-cylinder turbocharged 1.6 liter units, a proposal that had being strongly opposed by certain teams such as Ferrari.

    Now the sports’ governing body, the FIA, has offered an alternative: 1.6-liter turbocharged V6s with hybrid Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS), with the implementation of the new rules being pushed back one year, to 2014.

    This compromise, which has already been approved and will soon be ratified by the World Motor Sport Council, is expected to appease the opposing teams, as it offers a compromise between the two layouts.

    Turbo V6 much better than turbo inline 4, since it balances things like exhausts, twin turbos, etc. They will be punching some serious HP numbers.

    Interesting to note Audi V6 diesel used at L-Mans this year.

    I found last nights race to be bloody boring!!

    Am happy to see this V6 turbo idea, I think its a good compromise. Shouldnt lose much of the trademark F1 scream and the HP figures will be very healthy indeed.

    not only do I watch on PVR, I often watch up to 24 hours later, so I have a complete media blackout in the meantime so the result is still "live" for me

    Has there been any information on how they intend to prevent excessive HP etc?
    Back when the turbo's were banned, the 1.5L V6 Turbos had 1200bhp in race trim... or about 3-400hp more than they run now. Seems crazy to be going back to that but with an extra 100cc and 20 odd years of engineering knowledge!

    Newey said in a recent interview that they were going to the 4-cylinder turbos to get Audi into F1, then Audi changed thier minds and decided F1 was not what they wanted so they've changed it to a V6. Audi will most likely just stick to Le Mans.

    Vettel is just smashing everyone and with that car he's almost unbeatable. He's a good kid, but it's hard to like him when you're an Aussie and a Webber fan.

    The person I really want to stab is Helmut fing Marko. The sheer pointless and unnecessary drivel that spews from his idiotic gob sometimes He's not helping anyone - even Sebastian looks bad being so 'minded' by him. Makes Seb really look like he's being given the special treatment which takes the shine off his results a bit for me. Marko makes the team look like hypocrites with the whole "equal treatment" comments of Horner's being contradicted by Marko's implications. Then he comes out and says Red Bull "need another Sebastian"!! Smoker of cock!

    He's only there coz he's mates with Dietrich.
