Further update....
Fuel is present, but no spark at the plugs. Already ruled out the ignition coil (tried a known working coil). Will replace the plugs, dizzy cap and rotor arm tomorrow, and see if that gets it started.
OK, to be more specific with the problem we have, car just turns over, and will not fire up. It did fire up once, but died within a minute. When it was running, it was a bit lumpy.
Now, the thing is, it was fine until we took it to the jet wash and gave the engine bay a quick clean. I thought maybe there is some water somewhere, but that was a week ago, so any water would have evaporated by now. Also, once we got it started after the jet wash (which was a struggle) it ran fine and started fine, until the next day when it just cut out whilst driving. And this is where we are now.
We have a fully functional Mk3 Golf 2.0 GL we can use to swap parts around with, so hopefully don't have to waste too much cash replacing parts that are not actually faulty.
If anyone else can give any pointers on things to check/try, please let us know.
Thanks
