You can replace just the barrell with either a new one (about $85 from VW) or a second hand one.
Make sure you keep the barrell and the pins so you can swap them over into the new barrell exactly as they came out.
When I was repairing my power window (which had dropped off it's fixings) I broke the lock at the back of barrel. Now the door locks only from passangers side !! Does anyone have a diagram of the assembly ? Where would I go to get some spares ?
And on another note, who in Melbourne would anyone recommend to take the car for an honest service.

Did you break the hook off the pin? Its called a lock eccentric.
The Ibiza specific one has to come from overseas, i sell em for $20, plus feight to your door.

I think it is the hook off the pin. I'll take it apart this weekend and post a picture, and I'll get one off you if that's what it is. Thanks for the reply.

Hey Golf Loon,
my 95 Ibiza GTI just nudging on 95K and is due a service would you have an idea what's recommended ?
Still haven't had a chance to pull open the door but I'm quite sure it's the hook. I'll have it pulled apart this weekend hopefully,

You dont need to pull apart the door.
Open the door, undoo the allen key or torx bolt under the rubber bung to release the handle.
Then simply bump the handle forward and pull it out of the door.
You can swop over left to right handles and locks to allow you the drivers side working at least.
Easy cars to service, check the belt has been done, makes a mess if it breaks. If yes, simply change the oil and filter, I use Magnatec in my courtesy car Ibiza GTI and it likes it. If you do a belt do the tensioner too.
Check the rocker cover for leaks, usually comes out of the back of the gasket and drops onto the inlet manifold and out of the seal on the end of the head above the gearbox.
Check the oil pressure switches for leaks, common on these cars.
I also usually check the gearshift linkages, there is a relay shaft with a moulded ball on it and the ball breaks off, resulting in lots of play in the shifter.
Check the coolant is in good shape. Green is ok if its good quality with ethenol glycol in it, if changing the coolant I might be tempted to change the waterpump and thermostat if they look old, before replacing the coolant with G12++
Check the plastic water outlets on the head, common to fail and leak.
Finally check the brakefluid and top up the washer bottle.
Check the tyres and brakepads. Disks should be renewed, not skimmed and I use german brakepads.
Then go for a drive, I drove mine today for the first time in weeks and they are such fun. Good car enjoy it.

Thanks for that, great idea with changine the lock over that will solve the problem for a while and I can then order the replacemt. I'm not sure that the Belt's have been changed, hopefully they are, I did notice some loosness in the gearchange, but thought that was normal, is this an easy part to source ?
I need new tyres on the front an alignment as it's chewing the outside a little abnormally. All the rest looks pretty good, and yes I have had the car for a year and enjoy it. I will most lilkely look at enhancing the suspension a little as it does have a little body roll.
