Yes same engine as Golf 2.0. I didn't listen to the video but it is probably just a hydraulic lifter. Some new oil and a bit of driving should fix it. Even if it doesn't a ticking lifter is nothing to worry about.
hi all, so after i owned my ibiza gti, my brother really took an eye to it, i sold mine (I REALLY REGRET IT NOW!!!) about a yr ago and missed it ever since.
My brother will be getting his licence soon so we started looking for a car, perfect timing! this little beauty poped up, for 600, the owner misspelled the ad and did not mention it was a gti. No rego and could not start it, we are second owners with 85% service history, he did mention it had been sitting for a while and the engine did have a slight ticking noise.
so after a trailer ride home we did some investigative work.
checked oil/coolant levels
checked belts
filled fuel and got her to fire up!
seems to idle ok, definitely could be better and the engine dose have a decent ticking noise, it has done 218,xxx kms and blows no smoke.
ill include a vid down below, if anybody knows the problem please give us a heads up.
Also if it is severer ill be looking at doing an conversion...
either coupra 16v-mk3 golf 2L- or vr6 depends on how much we have to play with and the price of the engine.
How hard will the golf 2L be to fit? isn't it the same?
thanks

Well after buying a oil filter and castrol oil (bout $50) and I started to heat up the engine the dam thing stopped rattling.... Lol
Ok the to do lost is slowly growing:
The ac dose not seem to be working
The fans (radiator & ac) are constantly on
The clutch is not engaging
The clutch: the peday is pressed in all the way but selecting a gear is not possible, it just grinds. Also the pedal dose not spring back, any ideas???

I'm starting to think the clutch is stuffed and needs a new one. Is there an inspection port to view the clutch?
Anyone???
What is the best place to get another cable??
Take the front left wheel off and you should see a circular cap with the VW logo. Pry it off with a flat head screwdriver and you should be able to see a metal finger that's designed to press that piston looking part inwards to disengage the clutch. The finger could be cracked but the crack might not be visible until you take it off. Shouldn't be expensive to buy a replacement finger or you can try welding the crack back up and have a working clutch the same day.
This page explains it with more detail ReleaseArm
Thanks for that link. really helpful,
Well my release arm gets hard at the 9 o'clock position, and my cable had a massive amount of play in it
, so i guess it was not working properly. Where would be my best place to get another clutch cable and should i get a mechanical adjustment or an auto adjust.
Ill pop the VW logo cover and have a look but i dont think it was the problem, the clutch cable has actually split from the plastic pin that secures it to the pedal, so i need a new one regardless.

just called Volkstorque here in SA, $135 for a clutch cable from Sydney seems very high to me. Where the best place for parts like this.
Just had a look under the VW cap and the finger looks intact, i press on the arm and didn't see any play regardless. So i dont think its the finger. I found a clutch cable on ebay, ill pick it up but it is the auto adjust not the manual.
eBay Australia: Buy new & used fashion, electronics & home d
What i need to know is:
When the clutch is not pressed and free at 9 o'clock, how hard should it be to pull the clutch to the 10 o'clock and disengage the clutch plate??? I find it impossible to pull up to the 10 o'clock position.
Any help would be appreciated.
