Thoughts on second hand Scirocco with late service

    Hi All,

First thanks for all the great information I've been reading over the last few months, which has helped me in looking for a Scirocco. Much appreciated (think I've read nearly every topic in here).

Unfortunately budget wise doesn't allow me to buy new (among a few other things), so I'm looking at a 2012 Scirocco.

A local dealer has one that was recently traded in for a new Golf R. The price (initially mentioned) was a good deal given it has a sunroof and Dynaudio. Was told it was immaculate (hadn't seen it until Saturday) and cosmetically it's pretty good (no major damage etc). Service history though is where I felt a sudden hmm.

First service (15k) was done on time. Then the 30k service, wasn't done until 40k (did 25k kms in 8 months) and then the 45k was done 5k later.

Still has 9 months factory warranty on it, so spoke to VWA to see how/if this would affect the warranty and they said, although it doesn't void the warranty it could potentially make them look further into (not) approving an engine claim (but I can work it out with the dealer (Volks Wagon dealer) regarding this if they were to agree they will take care of it (of course would get this in writing).

There is a question and it is, has/is this likely to have damaged the engine reducing it's life etc. Should I just stay away, or if I can get a decent discount due to it, is it likely to be ok (I get these are hard questions to answer, just seeing what your thoughts are).

My Sti I had before, I did oil changes on every 7.5ks, so to me even 15k seems long.

IF I was going to go ahead with it (they are doing a mechanical check today), I would definitely be pushing for a discount, but is it even worth the risk with that?

    Thanks guys (and girls).

Can I ask what dealer is it being sold at? Realistically the extra km's in between those services won't kill it. One would also assume that being they racked up 25k in 8 months it would have been mostly low load highway cruising.

If it's a good deal then I'd pull the pin on it. Warranty won't cause you any issues in regards to the service history, what it may impact on is the chance of any good will.

Thanks Snail Style. It's at Burwin in Ferntree Gully, but it's not listed for sale or in the yard as was just traded in and I already have a tentative deposit on it (but subject to me actually being ok with the car). VWA told me direct (rang them for a chat) that it could affect any warranty claims, as of course they are the ones who approve all warranty claims and payments to the dealer to fix issues.

Will see what the inspection says which is being done today or tomorrow.

    Thanks Again.

Id be very cautious at buying a car with such a long time between oil changes. Ive seen a few 2.0TFSIs that have either gone too long between services or used poor quality oil start to have severe oil sludge problems.

Thanks vwryogi. Put things on hold for a month or two as some expenses have come up. But your car looks clean.

Thanks Tim. I decided not to buy it, I was just too concerned about a) if there was any future engine issues and b) the fact VWA said it might deny a warranty claim.

I would have purchased it if they gave me a great deal on it (to counter the fact that I was inherently taking a long term risk with it and the warranty risk), but the dealer thought it was a non issue and said 'not gonna happen', pretty rudely actually and may have given me a few hundred off the original price (not worth anything). I won't be going to Burwin again as my views were justified and they were obviously just annoyed they didn't get the sale (as it was traded in a month earlier as they thought I was going to buy it). I was however originally told the car was immaculate. I don't define immaculate as neglecting your engine for 20k kms.

Thanks for reinforcing my thoughts on the right decision.
