    Say hi to FLOSSI

Matt asked me to post some pictures.

FLOSSI and I have been together since she was only just out of warranty. We nearly parted company when one of the last Scala’s, a few weeks old was stolen and torched - nearly broke my heart. Fortunately FLOSSI hadn’t been sold at that point so we resumed never to be separated. In all this time apart from maintenance she has only let me down twice, once a pin worked loose on the distributor hall unit connector and the other the throttle cable pulled out of the pedal bush. On both occasions we were running again within ten minutes.

I had an MGB that was going to come out with me when I moved to Australia in the mid 90’s but it got too hard and somehow it turned out easier to bring the Scirocco. Ever since we have had fun meeting lots of people here. Its pleasant how many people who have owned or hankered after a Scirocco overseas still feel affectionate about them.

She became FLOSSI when I got quite touchy with a partner who would leave her outside without putting her in the garage back in the UK - I think she said something like “I suppose you want me to put FLOSSI into the stable and give her a rub down too?”. Girlfriend and I are no longer together however the name stuck!

FLOSSI is February 1987 built which was changeover month before colour coded body trim came in. She is a completely stock GT and I’ve tried to keep her absolutely as VW intended even to the extent of maintaining the Pierburg 2E2 carb and boy is that hard work. There cant be many left that still run perfectly through the warm up sequence on 2E2’s. The only departure from original has been a fuel filler neck – I got a custom exhaust fabricator to make one for me out of stainless – I think it cost $70 and is a far better product than the original.

Plans for the immediate future include a brake upgrade to Scirocco 16v spec and full Scirocco 16v stress and anti-roll bars which have been sat waiting to be fitted for a year or two now! I’ve got a full genuine Scirocco a/c set up which may go in when I feel I need the challenge of fitting it (I’m getting old ok!).

She has run most of her life on Mobil 1 (changed every 5,000 miles) and I swear by the stuff – despite a fairly high mileage she still doesn’t use a drop between changes nor suffer from the notorious cold morning death rattle!

Plan is to try and keep her original within the Scirocco specifications but make such improvements as are appropriate to keep modern day driving practical. Maybe one day full 16v specification who knows!

First two photo's taken immediately before departure to Australia, bottom photo taken early last year. To my knowledge there is another MkII in SA and a MkI we encounter occasionally.

    Lovely

Mate, she's a credit to you. Many of us lust over a Scirocco (Loon directed me to a diesel example for auction on ebay UK...check it out!) and I would have bought it in an instant if it were in Oz.

You's a bit like me in that you have all of this stuff ready to fit but have trouble getting htere. Must be our age

Nice pics mate, good to see another Rocco over here.

Mine is the same model 86 GT, but more tired than yours. I`m gonna go body coloured trim and bigger engine really soon.

Thanks Brackie. I saw the Diesel Scirocco - did occur to me that it wouldnt have sounded terribly different to many a Scirocco (or MkII Golf) Ive heard on a cold morning with noisy tappets. Gee they can clatter if they arent looked after!
