Really bad fuel consumption

my Golf R uses around 30% more fuel than my Mk6 GTI. R has 2500km's on clock, GTI had 22000.

I've noticed the R is terribly inefficient when cold.

On an average tank, driven sedately with the odd squirt, I get around 13L/100km's - that's mostly urban km's.
I'm guessing the AWD, lower comp engine with bigger turbo, and the 19" wheels would have a lot to do with consumption.

Oh, and my first tank returned 15L/100km's

Early days and low kms to base my opinion off but I find that my Scirocco gets 12 to 13 L/100km around town. I can get down into the 8L/100km on a highway run. Surprisingly it compares quite well to my last car a 2006 polo gti (running a tune) around town the pog was probably worse and on the highway better I could get down to 6L/100km and below if I was being gentle.

I will be the first to agree that this does not make much sense - I would have thought the polo would own the rocco around town (lighter and slightly smaller engine) and the more aerodynamic (looking at least) shape and extra gear would catch up on the highway. Maybe it is the extra rubber.

5100km, APR + basic bolt-ons, manual trans: 9.6L/100km... And I commute in peak hour from my place in Hoddle St everyday.

DSG is the problem. Get a real gearbox and you can then drive (properly) according to the conditions

Mine is a manual and still pretty new - so it will be interesting to see what it ends up at. Reasonably sure that I did the right thing in going manual (well for me anyway) - though I have to admit that it can get a bit busy working the gears when you are in the hills.

If you average 15000 km/yr at $1.50 a liter 1L/100km difference in fuel economy equates to around $230 over a year - there are people on this forum that spend more than that on car polish. Hardly a deal breaker (even if you swapped it for a hybrid you would save about $1100 a year on fuel) . The cost of keeping it in fresh tyres probably needs to be considered You need to burn petrol to go places you need to burn more to get there faster. Tyres are a different story.

I think the fact that they have a small fuel tank gives the impression that the car uses more fuel than it actually does. In reality, VW should have really given the GTi and R's models another 10-15L fuel capacity to compensate for their higher fuel usage over the more economically aimed models.

Just did 380km over the weekend and fuel needle is just under 1/2 way. And that included a couple of nice 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear blasts on the freeway.

PS - you will find the ecomomy improve by a good 1.0-1.5L / 100km after a tune, as the standard tune is very rich on these cars.

That is so true. The 135 bimmer had a 50l tank too. I was averaging around 15/100km in that. It seemed i was visiting a Shell every day. The 11/100km i'm getting in the R makes such a difference, i don't so much care about the fuel saving but i do enjoying driving past many, many more Shell stations than I used too.

The problem is these performance version share the same fuel capacity as the base models.

There are several tuning options you could consider that don't need a local dealer - such as Bluefin, DNA Tuning, and Viezu. All 3x of these brands have a handheld unit which is compatible with the Scirocco R / Golf R engine.
