That is so true. The 135 bimmer had a 50l tank too. I was averaging around 15/100km in that. It seemed i was visiting a Shell every day. The 11/100km i'm getting in the R makes such a difference, i don't so much care about the fuel saving but i do enjoying driving past many, many more Shell stations than I used too.
The problem is these performance version share the same fuel capacity as the base models.
