Is the Golf R also on the banned list?
You can spend all day on here debating what you can and cant do so on Monday take yourself into a VICROADS office and ask them.

They make the rules they have the answers. We can only Google the same as you can and pass on what we find.

For legalities you should always ask the relevant authorities, not come on Forums for opinions some of which ( mine included ) could be wrong.
Read what it says in the Vicroads link I provided and if you dont understand that you have to have a Victorian address to register and insure a car GO IN AND ASK.

Make sure you tell them full information

    Your age

    Your residency status

Which licence you actually have and where from.

The make and model of car you want to buy.

Ask the proper questions and you will get the right answers.

Interesting to know it doesn't apply to international, what happens when you transition to a state based licence as you are required to after a certain time period?

I thought insurance was the issue at $4,500 per year??

Did you tell them your age and whether you LIVE in Victoria or just ask if you can drive a Sirrocco on an international licence

Also what is your definition of an International licence Is it a licence that you can buy in your home country to use in various overseas places or just a licence issued in your home country which may or may not be recognised in Australia.

I have one which I can use in different countries but it only lasts for a certain time and then automatically expires.

There is quite a difference as when I came here from my home country I had to change to a Queensland licence within a certain time and if I didnt I would have been unlicenced and uninsured.

Still doesn't seem right. International or not, if you don't have the driving experience to handle a car like that, you shouldn't be driving it. It endangers everyone on/around the road (not just yourself). Just my 2c.

Well I rang them up and the answer was this

If you are here on a temporary visa (eg a student for 3 years) you can drive on your overseas licence UNTIL IT EXPIRES Then you have to get a VIC one.
If you have a permanent residency visa you have to change to a Vic licence inside of 6 months from when it was issued as below.

Either way if you are under the licence age for a full licence and have to get a P licence you cant drive a P banned car

    Here is the rule
The requirement to change your overseas driver licence to a Victorian driver licence depends on whether your stay in Victoria is temporary or permanent.

If you are in Victoria on a temporary visa, you can drive on your overseas driver licence for as long as it is current providing it is in English or accompanied by an English translation or International Driving Permit. There is no requirement to get a Victorian driver licence.

If you have entered Victoria on a permanent visa issued under the Migration Act 1958, you may drive on your overseas driver licence for:

six months from the date you first entered Australia if the permanent visa was issued before you entered Australia; or,
six months from the date when the permanent visa was issued to you if the permanent visa was issued to you whilst in Australia.
If you want to continue driving in Victoria after this time you must change your overseas licence to a Victorian driver licence.
