Well with a little bit of patience I managed to sort out the cracks. I think my welding is getting a little better. A pic of the finished product.

No filler was used due to the nature of this area it would just end up cracking anyways. The paint is a reasonable match (not perfect) although its just temporary until the car gets a full respray some time in the future. The cracks seem to have been caused by the rivets in the wiper mechanism sheering off and subsequently putting more stress on the area. I made sure to rectify that issue before putting it all back together.

Onto the next challenge. Replacing the strut mounts. I know it all looks pretty when you have the caps on but this doesnt really make life easy when you need to undo the bolts!

Anyways I replaced the mounts today with later model units which should be a bit more robust so the only things left to get her roadworthy will be to replace the speedo and the wiper blades. Lets hope that when I get the old girl inspected again they dont find new things for me to fix!

Finished replacing the speedo the other day (thanks for the donation stu!). Took her for a test spin and it works fine which was a relief!

One other thing that had been bothering me was the crusty Philips stereo that was just slapped into the dash. A good friend of mine come across this old school AM Blaupunkt radio in his travels and instantly thought of me. A few slight modifications to the facia plate that come with it and the install has come up quite nice I thought. I wasnt too fused if it didnt work but turns out they still broadcast AM radio!

Love it Tim! Can't help but feel happy seeing that gorgeous Rocco in that yellow.

    How cool are the seats...

I also love that yours was born the same year that my current ride celebrates the 35th anniversary of the GTI
