Your thoughts on 20mm poke and adaptors

Hey Guys,
Thinking of giving the rear of the VR a bit more poke so I want to space the diablos out on the rear 20mm. Will be getting the guard lips rolled so will hopefully clear ok? Car is lowered about 40-50mm approx. from stock. I've also seen two different kinds of spacers, the ones that just have holes and you use longer bolts into the existing hub thread and the type that bolt to your hub and then have studs protruding from them to mount your wheel on. Is there any difference between these types i.e. one is stronger than the other etc?

The slip on spacers you speak of would be too dangerous in a 20mm size, so I would personally go for a bolt on spacer (ie bolt onto the hub) if going 20mm. You can get them made up for around $50 each. As long as they are made well, they should be fine and strong enough to suit the Golf.

I dont think there are any problems provided u get longer bolts equivalent to what spacer size u are using. H+R make up to 25mm spacer plates, and if u think about it all five bolts have to fail before the wheel falls off.

The bolt thru spacers I am talking about do actually sit on the hub (like the H&Rs Peedman mentioned) , not those crappy floating ones, they're dangerous. Same shape as the ones with studs they just bolt through instead.

Just wondered if there was any strength differences? I can't really see how there would be as long as they both take the load on the hub.

The safer and legal way would be to get a plate made up and bolt it behind the stub axle using longer bolts. It will then just extend the rear beam ad make the trck wider, but cant shatter, or be seen by the cops.

I agree. Aydan (gld_gti) just did something similar for his Mk3 as well.

With adaptors, I would definitely use bolt-ons for a 20mm spacer!
