You should be changing it when you do a new clutch . If the seal does fail your gonna be spilling brake fluid all over a new clutch !
Guys, I'm trying to put my silly car back together. All I've got left to do is spark leads, engine covers, one coolant hose from radiator to engine, a starter motor bolt which isn't impossible but is very annoying, and CLUTCH SLAVE CYLINDER.
My problem is this. When we had my engine in pieces (doing the clutch and timing chains) i pushed the clutch pedal in () and this little gray cylinder looking thing popped right out of the slave cylinder, and I don't know how it is supposed to go back in (I assume before the rod, spring and rubbery thing that are in the slave cylinder now). Can anyone be of any help? Have I actually broken the piece and do I need a new one or is there a way I can squeeze it back in/put it back together and top up the hydraulic fluid?
Cheers guys

Fed from the brake master cylinder mate, there is a take off hose feeds the clutch master cylinder which in turn feeds the slave on the box.

Oh, and thankyou Jmac I'll be needing to top up brake fluid then..we had to bleed a little off one of the brakes too.

Is the starter in? Does the car start? I`d try that first and see that the chains are working. If not you will have to take it all apart again and can fix the slave cylinder then.
