Intermittent VR ...

Well I've got another 2 problems with the VR, the first of which being the strange unreliability of internal switchgear and the wiper stalks and the constant draining of the battery.

The first problem is an odd one, as every 2nd or 3rd start up all the internal switchgear in the dash decides to take a day off, and this includes the aircon, fan, heater, wipers and anything else in the console. But then on another start up all these things would begin working again like nothing happened. Odd to say the least. I'm also getting a whirring/humming sound from plastic unit on the the right of the intake manifold which is mounted on a bracket with a series of wires connected to it, which seems to go on for some time once the car is off.

The other problem is that the car is constantly eating up batteries, even the relatively new one from my GL. I strongly believe this is from the stupid aftermarket immobiliser which has been fitted to the car. But I can't honestly find the bastard! Any possible suggestions where the awful thing might be lurking so I can dismember it?

I used to fit alarms and stuff. I would expect the immobiliser to cut the fuel pump and the starter motor. The normal place to get these would be under the steering column for the starter. The fat red/black is the wire, you'll probably find it's got some black wires connected to it and these will run off to the immobiliser, wherever it is. From there you'll be able to hunt down the fuel pump cut. I used to do this in the drivers side sill. The wire is yellow and red IIRC.

It sounds to me like you have a relay problem.

That might explain why the low steering column trim isn't properly in-place, I'll definately have a look at that in the next few days.

The humming noise is your auxillary water pump by the sounds mate and they are meant to run after shut down.

thanks for that I was worried for a minute about that, its completely different to the GL too. I've got the Bentley manual on the way too so that should help me learn more about the VR6 motor.
