    WTD: Clutch replacement guide!

I'm looking for a guide / excerpt from a workshop manual for doing the clutch on a VW Golf CL, 11-96 build, ADZ engine

    Any help much appreciated!

    Thanks!

    Cheers

Here is a site with a series of DIY's on the same transmission of your car, Peter Jones posted it up before and I've used it once already to change the oil.

The Passat Manual over in this thread is probably close enough.

    Check it out.

My approach would be to keep undoing bolts 'till the clutch comes out, put a new one in and do all the bolts back up.

I might have skipped a few steps there.

You'll need new fly wheel bolts as well as the disc and you should ideally replace the rear main seal as well which will require new pressure plate bolts. If you're being super thorough you'll do the clutch release bearings too.

It's not too hard, just a lot of heavy lifting.

Where abouts are you located? If you update your profile there might be someone in you neighbourhood with the info you seek.

    Awesome man, very nice! Thanks!

The only think that could be better is the actual manual excerpt

I found that manual in my search, and added a direct link to that thread!

Doesn't have anything on clutch that I could find however.

I've done a significant amount of mechanical work in the past, but my experiences with VW so far have been a bit trying to be honest!

The broken off bit of the clutch cable guide at the pedal end (at the top), and the subsequent attempt to remove the bracket, which seems to be the first part of the car that is assembled? The rest of the car seems to be made around it! I ended up welding it back up in situ, but it wasn't the most fun I've ever had!...

Then the self adjusting clutch and the resetting of that and the location of the engine ECU and... hehe

So I thought I best get a guide / manual for the clutch before VW threw me another curve ball I wasn't quite expecting!

    Cheers

I've got a Haynes book of lies that covers the MK3 but to be honest you're better using Google. (Or preferably the Bently Manual)

If you get stuck I can scan it up tomorrow and mail you the PDFs.

Once u get the gearbox out then its easy peasy, the crucial torque settings are 60nm + an extra 1/4 turn for the pressure plate bolts and 15nm for the flywheel bolts.

Yep, looks pretty straight forward...doesn't look like any show stoppers

Just had to check tho, after trying to get the clutch pedal bracket out!
(Looks like changing the clutch will be easier )

    Thanks all

4 cyl 2l mk3 has the pressure plate bolted onto the crank .
Are you sure about 15nm for p-plate bolts , I would have thought at least 30 !
