    Worth it or Not?

My parents have recently been hinting at the chance of me buying their 97 GL off them (I've been driving it the most lately anyway) but knowing the work it needs doing on it, I am a little cautious.

The work I know it needs on it is a new auto gearbox, new exhaust, the headliner needs replacing (half way through doing this myself though), the suspension and wheel alignment needs looking at and the rear bumper, left door and left mirror could do with a respray. Think the cruise control is on the blink as well, but not too sure.

Other than that, its a fairly good little car. We have owned it from new and it has relatively low miles on it (something like 114,000 from memory). Knowing what is wrong with it, would I be better off just passing up on it and chasing a cheap and slightly older CL for myself?

A manual swap for our current car or even a manual car itself would be out of the picture for the near future at least, but thats down to a few issues I've got and my auto license

auto's are expensive to fix and will likely break again sooner rather than later. headliner is a sinch (you should take a look at the DIY thread and re-do the pillars at the same time).

With all the body work it needs, tell them you will buy it off them for $2000 and then save it for later. It can be a project car so that you can get your green p's and convert it to a manual.

I agree with Lachie..they're your parents so they should let you steal it off them. give them 2k if it runs, and have some fun learning how to do stuff yourself!

There was a member on here (who shall remain unnamed) who sold his CL to his son for $10,000 and it was in no better shape than the one you describe. Hopefully your parents will be nicer

    $10, wow if only haha.

I had mentioned the $2000 figure to them the other night and got laughter in return, so I will just start keeping an eye out for a cheapish CL or something that I can do what I want with it.

There is a few CL's for under $5k on carsales at the moment, so factoring in some repairs I wouldn't have thought $2k is all that unreasonable, especially for a family deal.

Hahaha, how rude. They expect their own son to pay more than $2000 when it isn't even worth that in the market?

Dude, tell them to sell it themselves!

Eh, not all that phased. Didnt like the colour all that much anyway, far too maroon for my liking haha. Now is the time to start attempting to guilt trip them into throwing a couple of hundred my way so I can get something in a bit better shape, my birthday is coming up after all.

Dad did just renew the rego on it I guess, but ah well. If I get my own I can either fix the other one or raid it for parts late at night when no one is looking...

I think 2000 would be a good price. I don't know how much an auto replaced on a vw would cost but even the thought of it makes my colon go tight. My auto box on a crappy old ea falcon was close to 2 grand.
