Worth getting?? Need Help!!

Hey Guys,

As some of you know, ive been lookin for a VR6 and iv came across this:

After putting a deposit down and decided to get it inspected.

The results came in & the problems that has been specified to me are:
Engine:
* Slight Valve train noise (so timing change needs replacing soon)
* Seepage at sump gasket area
* Seepage from tappet cover area
* Seepage at lower/rear engine area
* Leak at bypass hose & thermostat housing

He said the seepage was wiped down and he couldnt tell if the sump area and/or the gearbox is leaking oil.
He also said that u cant really tell until u drive it for 5000+ km to find out

Dealer said he will fix the leakage on the bypass hose and replace the housing

Steering/suspension:
* Right Frong Bush worm/ excessive freeplay all others are fair
* Slight freeplay on wheel bearings on Left and right Rear

The dealer said the RF Bush are to be replaced.

So what do you guys think.
The car is advertised for 11 990 and the best he can offer me is 11 700 with 6months rego and minus warranty (does any1 know what warranty covers)

Is this car worth it? What do you guys think.
Will i be buying myself into a problem?

all those things are pretty cheap to fix me thinks... the leakages shouldn't cost more than $500. For a VR6 that is pretty good for repair costs...
make sure the window regulators work and same for the aircon.
there is a thread on here somewhere about the Bushings... dont know how much that will be to fix.


tell the guy he is a con artist for a price like that though:

this is the part that gets me - he has it listed on the website as having a free 12 months warranty, but he tells you he can do it for less without the warranty. that means it isn't really free, is it?! what a ****.

tell him you want it for 10000 with 12 months warranty and rego. all of the other stuff he lists on the ad comes standard with the 97 model... he may come up to 11000 but that (imo) is a decent price for a VR6 with 84,000kms.

Minor work, but as bboyskidz said, the price is way over. $11900 only willing to bargain to $11700, that rediculous. Play hard to get. Offer$10,000 or $10,500 max.

And the thing is, Joey ... when you make that offer ... stick by it! Don't go into this thinking "well maybe I'll go up to $xxx ... mean what you say or the stealer will have you paying his price.

thats the dealer on fairford rd..little shifty,has had a few vr6's for sale over the yrs.stick to your guns and make sure he rectifies all the points on the list,ask to see the receipt.
that free waranty has alot of strings attched ,dealer specisfies warrenty is much better.
83000 kms for a 10yr old car throws big warning bells to me...been sitting around for some reason,written off? blown motor? thats 8300km a yr?? WTF???sounds a bit too good to be true.but you never know!!! warrenty is the best guarantee you can get its ok!

thanks with the replies so far.

With the km it has traveled
I've been shown and looked at the service history and they look genuine.
All have been serviced by VW Artarmon and Merc (forget its suburb)

I know that doesnt mean squat in the end but they all look genuine.
The drive of the car was awesome.
engine response and clutch feel was great.

As to pricing..Yeah it does sound a tad over-pricey but lookin at all the VR6 advertised on carsales/tradingpost etc it seems quite reasonable.
But i guess you guys would know better then i would

I reckon its too much for the car.
They have a big bill looming at 100,000kms and the water and oil leaks will cost you over $1000 to get sorted. The water pipe is hard to get to and so the labour will be heaps and the oil leaks will need the intake removing, which again will be heaps.
I`d be offering 9k tops, or buy Gavins black car from Bondi in the classifieds which is cheaper and a good car.

lol i just looked at the original price - there is absolutely no freaking way he would get anywhere near 13,990. hahahaha, fool.

loon is right (he is always right - what would we do without him!?)
offer him $9k for it or tell him to get flapped (to put it in other terms). 100,000km mark is expensive - as is the 200,000km mark. tell him that if he wants anything above 10, then he needs to include warranty+rego and he needs to fix all the leaks/issues.

you have to keep in mind that ALL cars listed online are way overpriced and the owner will have this in mind when he posts it there. there is always a 'bargaining zone' with any car price...

edit: by the way, good work for asking on here (i wish i had) - with all this knowledge, you will be ready and armed to take any over-priced VR6 seller down!

Having just sold a Vr6 and taking into account what I got for mine and what had been done to it, you'd want the car to be absolutely perfect to pay anywhere near 9K.
