I had this when I had my VR6
I replaced the motor and reg with a fairly new one
I think it is something to do with the wiring in the car
Be interesting to see if anyone else knows
Alrighty,
So the window regs on my back windows of my 2.0L golf both went at the same time.... One window jammed down, the other jammed up. I've solved the lowered window with my special woodworking skills and its fixed for the time being......
BUT...
The front passenger window stops working sometimes and can generally be fixed by turning off the car, cursing, starting the car again and she works fine then. Is this typical window regulator failure on the front or a wider electrical problem on the window circuits? Thoughts?

Sounds like it could be faulty wiring, yes. Although that'd be a hard thing to check unless you were game with a multimeter and knew what to look for, which I can't comment on hehe.

A hell of a lot of the window probs on mk 3's these days are broken wires inside the rubber tubes going to the doors from the body I have found over the last few years...

True!
My rear right window seldom works, and that's directly related to the wires in the door rubber. If it doesn't work, I twist the door rubber to the tighten position, close the door again and it works.

Yes, can be typical of the Motors...... i think its something to do with the alarm/key.... i have had a few weird window moments while opening and locking the car with the key where the front passenger window would go up and down on its own......
I did find a forum a while back that reckons it might have been the ignition switch, which typically wears out.....
