I have been looking for a clean low KM VR6 for over 3 months.... right now I have given up....
I have only bought common or garden cars in Adelaide. Camry wagon, Outback. Everything else I have bought interstate, 2 Seats off golfloon, Audi A3 from Melbourne and S3 from Sydney..
Be prepared to travel and it's not that big a deal. I saved heaps on the S3 by going to Sydney, more than covering the air fare and petrol back home.

Mk3 2.0 8v Injected AGG
Mine was only $6,500 when I got it...
...although I have replaced the AC, the Heater core, the Headlining, the regulators, the intake, the headlights, the suspension... and many other bushes, sensors, filters, screws, plugs...
OK a few of those were by choice, but still getting it just right can easily cost what you spent on the car when it has busted bits.

They stopped making them more than 10 years ago, the chances of finding one tucked in a shed are pretty slim I reckon. Also, I don't think low mileage ones are looked after as well.
Having seen the condition of my S3 with 194000 and some sub 100k examples, I know I bought the right one.

I was unable to find a vr6 in good condition in my price range, so I got a mk2 GTI instead, and it's been great so far.
haha..i want to cry!
i will be on the look out!
PM me guyz =)

Or if you want, you could do what i have done for the last 5 cars and my motorbike, and fly down to where ever it is, and drive back. Its good fun, you learn the car, and get a few days off from work to drive! What more could you want!
Just be sure that the car isnt a dodgey, i picked mine up from a bloke at German auto's in brisbane for 7 grand, it was a great buy, although its done 200,000 km's but it still good, and as everyone knows, these are the sort of cars that do not fall apart at 100,000 km's.
Hope this helps

I remember looking at VR6s about 3 or 4 years ago and even then they were hard to come by in the right spec for the right money and well looked after. As others have said, I imagine that yes it is even harder today and you either have to wait or get one at a fantastic price and then spend the money to get it up to spec.
On a side note I look forward to all the end of lease MkIV R32s that are currently flooding the market being snapped up so they become even more of a cult classic than they are.
Cheers,

Indeed, the Mk4 R32 is now coming down in price to a point where its a distinct possibility for my next ride.
I'd love to buy a car from interstate however the fly&drive idea isnt really a good one for Perthies. I dont really like the idea of going to melb then facing a 3500km drive back home with a car I dont know or trust (yet). Buying sight unseen and sticking it on a train tho...
