What fuel do you recommend? Premium unleaded?

Just got our first Golf and we are not exactly sure what type of petrol to use. The owners manual says to use Premium but I have been told it is only necessary for highway driving. Filled it up this afternoon with Premium and have seen about a hundred other options at the service station. What do you use for everyday city driving? Cheers.

Gday and welcome to the forums. This topic has been covered many a time in different forms. As a new member, please have a look at the search function and try to find any information you're seeking through that before posting, because chances are it's been covered before .

Just as a quick answer to your question though... My manual says my car should be given 95ron fuel or higher. So, I would suggest NOT filling up your golf with anything less than unleaded 95. I personally use 98 because the car (this is a fact..) runs better and goes further on the same amount of fuel. It only costs about 5 or 10 bucks more than the lowest priced fuel in the end, so it's almost worth it.

    Hope that helps.

I have only ever run 98 in my VR, even the wifes Subaru runs (almost) 100% 98 these days. While it costs more per fillup you seem to get a little further too which equals out. The upside is you should also get more power and a cleaner burning fuel

If you want to feel like you are saving money, you could fill with PULP (95 or 98 ) one week & providing you don't run it under 1/3 full, the next time fill with E10 (94ron). It will appear to be cheaper but in all likelihood, the fuel economy will be worse so the cents per kilometre will be about the same.

Or run it on United Boost95. I used to run my old Mk3.5 2.0L on that & it loved it. The ethanol gives the fuel system & valves a good clean & it burns a fraction cooler (but again, actual economy was worse).

Aren't golf's 'tuned' to run on premium? Hence why they would get better economy.

If you mean compared to e10 fuels, e10 gets worse economy because it has a lower amount of energy per unit so you need more fuel to make the same power.

And yes, they are tuned to run on premium, so if you use ULP91 then it will probably ping & behave like a heap of garbage.
