When I was looking at cars I had my heart set on a vr6, but had a look at a few mk4's, and a 1.8 mk3. The intererior on like all of the mk4s seemed to be falling apart, though they were still a fun little car to drive.

the sound of a vr6 makes it worth the trouble though

Despite having a fair period of trouble free motoring in my VR6, it has to be said that the common faults mentioned in this thread are all a matter of when and not if. Like I said my car was reliable for a few years but it is all catching up with me now.

The VR6 seems to be a really strong engine, but it's the plastic bits all around the engine that break. Just recently I've had a cracked coil pack, cracked electric water pump, and cracked heater core. Who would have thought plastic breaks when it's subjected to years of high temperatures?

I wish I could tell you that VR's are without problems but unfortunately this is not true. I have spent thousands in repairs on mine, but I wouldn't want to drive anything else. Don't buy it if you really want a reliable car above all else, get a Honda or something similar. If you are really set on a VW but want something more reliable than a VR, get a 1.8 or 2.0 mk3. Or if you are prepared to listen to all the advice and don't mind spending money on repairs, definitely go ahead and by that VR. They are pretty sweet cars.

Ok time for another question, the car is being sold by a dealer and comes with a 5 yr warranty and I was wondering what this will/won't cover? Or would I have to ask the dealer instead?

Oh wow! 5 years on an older car! I'd check with the dealer buddy - just ask him/her what it covers, e.g. gear box etc etc etc
    Sounds pretty good tho!
