    Legal Issues & Stretching Tyres

Couple of questions here, which arised from a convo with the old man...

Just wondering if there are any legal issues with deep, wide rims that have a bit of 'poke' from the fender/body?

Also, stretching tyres? Anyone wanna fill me in on some of the reasoning behind it, it's benefits, and how to do it?

And finally, adding dish to old rims. I read somewhere that it is possible to widen an old set of rims (I'm thinking MK3 steelies), if so what's the ballpark figure price I'll be looking at, and if you are a Melbournian, recommend me a place to have it done? Volkspower?

    Cheers,

Im not a 100% but i think if the wheel is comming past the fender it may be a defect. You would probably have to get the guards flaired.

NOt sure bout the idea of widening wheels

Widen steelies are do able, all they do is get a new outer rim and weld in the centre part of the rim at your desired off set. I'm pretty sure that's how it works anyways, in short at least. Doubt Volkspower would do it tho. Probably have to got to a wheel shop, that would fix gutter rash etc,. should be able to do it.

I always thought that tyre stretch was just a look thing mainly

    Cheers,

As for widen steelies it known as banding... What i recomend u do is have new hoops put onto the existing centers... We had some done in 13's and 15's and its sweet...

All u need is the standard wheels take them to a wheel builder, not your local trye joint bcuz he sends off and make more money... The wheel builder machines off your old hoop and welds back on a new wider hoop...

U need to consider offset... If u want it done PM and ill give a phone number... Costs around $120 per wheel all done

stretching the tyres does make the side walls of the tyre stiffer, giving you more traction/less tyre roll, but it also makes them harder. It also looks awesome but it is easier to get gutter rash.

Stretching tyres will reduce tyre wall flex, but too much stretch can cause issues with the tyre bead popping off the rim :-\ It is also illegal as your supposed to keep your tyres and rims close to the standard sizes. Everything is illegal these days

I love my stretch, i reckon it looks bloody awsome if done right, nothing worse than muffin tops :-X

Wheels out the guards is also illegal as mentioned before, but i reckon **** offset wheels that sit 30mm inside the guards should be illegal as it just looks soooooooooooooooo bad and reduces the cars balance!

Haha Ray's a dubber at heart

But yeah, everyone's pretty spot on from what I know too.

With stretched tyres, you only run the risk of the tyre popping out if you don't run them properly. By this, I mean under-inflating, over-inflating and changing them when they wear out. Remember that drifters use stretched tyres to reduce sidewall flex, and I'm sure you can appreciate how much stress these tyres get, yet they stay on the rim until wearing out completely.

    And ugh, what's offset?

The distance between the hub face and the edge of the rim... Know as ET or sometimes back space... Can be positive or negative
