    VR6 Reliability

    Hi guys,

    I've been a member for a while, and previously owned a '94 VR6.

I really loved my VR6, but in the end it just became far too expensive for a student to own. The number of Problems I had with the engine, electric windows, lights etc along with fuel became too much and I ended up selling for a Honda.

It was an older model, higher km (over 200k) and probably wasn't as well looked after as most of the ones on here.

However, I have recently come across a great 1996 model VR6, 120000km, well looked after. Owner hasn't reported any problems with windows etc.

The question is, can I expect to buy a lower kilometre model and NOT have as many problems as I did before? Will it be a reliable daily, or am I dreaming to ever expect a VR6 to be this?

    Cheers.

If it hasnt had anything previously replaced then it generally means the window regs, water pump, CVs, various coolant hoses, ignition leads, heater core, etc are all due for replacement soon.

Low kms is good but a 15 year old car is always going to have items that will perish due to age. Look for something that has had a little bit of work done to it I think.

VR6s can be reliable but you need to be realistic in regards to the cars age and pre-empt major failures such as the cooling system.

I just bought a VR6 off in father in law earlier this year, has 280 000kms, and apart from the passenger window, has been a dream, all depends on the service history and keeping up the maintenance. As previously advised, its 15 years old, don't expect it to be perfect, but it is a VR6 and that's all I need when I drive it

Don't go expecting it to be any more reliable then your first. It may be, but chances are it will have the same problems.

Clearly you've already owned one so you know what the cars are like, their little perks etc. If you think its worth the cost, then do it. If you were never particularly impressed with the first one, move onto something else.

Maybe it's a certain mindset, but I have been generally happy with the reliability of mine, but then when I think back I was a little pissed when the engine mounts went... or the fuel pump... or the coil pack...

But then it's fun to drive and sounds awesome!
