Timing chain is between the block and the gearbox which is more to the left.
PS pumps usually squeel. If your mechanic can't work it out take it to a real one.

Ahh are u talking about the ticking noise that comes out from the head
Or is this noise clearly coming from down below ?

The ticking noise coming from the head is quite a common thing for the age that our vr6's are now.

Replacing the drive belt and tensioner as I think it's that.could be either the ac pump or the water pump.

Had some dreamer p player fly down from Queensland to buy my car

Head the noise and said timing belt no good
So tried to offer me half the asking price
Went to the mechanics, he said the timin chain wouldn't snap would out last the motor.

Unfortunately on the Vr6s they dont outlast the motor regardless of what your mechanic is saying. He probably doesn't know VR6s very well if he doesn't know that.

Over time the plastic guides that help tension the chain wear out and can sometimes break causing the chain to loosen off or it just stretches over a large amount of kilometres (or if the engine has been flogged).

When they loosen off too much they can jump a tooth (which they do) and as the motors are an interference motor, the piston heads make contact with the valves and bend them and destroy the head which is a massive repair job.

Yours has a rattle coming from the passenger side, not the drivers side, in behind the coilpack which is where you can hear them start. Look up any youtube video and it will show you what the sound is like.
