You need a Multispline tool. 6mm I think.
Good car shops sell them, bad car shops think they are torx bits.
I doubt a hammer will help, but a new coilpack probably will.

I replaced mine a few weeks ago too after a couple of the terminals broke off. Got it from the US within 6 days. It's a Bremi and cost about $400 including shipping. You don't need to get the engine cover off, just attack it from the side. There's nothing in the way to break or damage.

That's alright, was hoping to get one cheaper than that, maybe under 300 bucks? And also, I need to get the engine cover off anyway to fix up the quality rubber ring that VW calls a water pump holder

Be nice if people didn't make DIY's and put them on the internet if they didn't know what they were on about. Read a few DIY's that said 'torx bit'.

I'll get a new tool, and hopefully that'll help. The one I have undoes most of the screws on the cover, just not the particular ones I need. I think it's because the alloy in the head corrodes the screws, hence the hammer. Hopefully all will be well.
