If you read loons post it suggests you have to remove the gearbox to do the head which you dont . Ive removed a head before without pulling the box out . If you like do a search on HPA turbo conversion and you'll see pictures of how they pull the head off and fit a headspacer without removing the gearbox .

This thread has so little useful information . Take the head here or take it there . Very few people have any real experience with these engines in this country . Porting the head and getting the right flow figures is crucial with the different runner lengths . Porting is useless without a decent cam (268 or larger) . You also cant just machine the head , there is no combustion chamber in the head on a 12V :

if you want to machine the head you'll need to pull the valves out and probably redo the inserts . To raise compression ratio you can either run a mk4 headgasket or change the pistons .
The only advice I can give you is take it to someone thats done one with proven gains . You'll need a chip as well as sorting out your fueling issues .

Ive never removed the trans to do a head, you only would if you were going to do the chains and guides, and even then the time you spend messing around with the box i would have the whole lot swung out the front, unbolt the front off the car and pull it all forward, makes for a better job instead of leaning over an engine bay.

    Hi Guys,

Thanks for the info Seb. I didn't want to machine the head to gain compression. just simply to clean it up if need be. Also i will be sourcing a mk4 gasket from the states. As for George, I've been a mechanic for audi for 7 years now so i guess i have a little experience in he field. I wasn't having a stab at golf loon, simply asking the question because as a mechanic it sounds insane to me to pull the gearbox out unless you need to replace the chains and guides. Should he have stated that the chains should be replaced due to the extra valve train stress than i would understand but as far as pulling the gearbox out just for fun it doesn't particuarly make sense. I'll try contact goodman race engines tomorrow. As Seb stated it would be best to find someone with experience and proof of gains which i was hoping to find not an argument about how to pull the head off.
Thanks for the info and contacts Seb & JVLR32.
    I'll keep you posted.
    Patrick.

Have a chat to KI11Z, he's currently building an monster VR6 n/a engine and may know something about machining & valves, etc or put you on to somebody who can give you the info you seek.
