    VR6 Head Work

    Hi Guys,

    I've gotta rip my head off my 95 vr6 cause the gaskets blown. Just wondering if anyone can recommend somewhere good in Sydney or Canberra to have it ported and lightly machined while its off. I plan on going 42mm intake and 36mm exhaust valves and just cleaning up the bowl and putting in heavy duty valve springs than later on throwing in a set of 268's with a chip. Anyone think these valves will be too big? Haven't got oo much experience playing with VR's.

    I will have to wait for the experts to come along with real advice, but I would be *very* interested in seeing a dyno sheet and a summary of the costs when it's all done. Would be interesting to see what the humble VR is capable of at what cost.

    My personal opinion is that it's pretty poor bang for buck. If you want to do it because you want to do it then that's cool but those heads flow soooooo poorly NA. It's the reason why nearly everyone goes for a blower or a turbo when looking for performance.

    You'll only get moderate power gains, but you will get gains.

    For really detailed info and for a good place to get some work done, contact Bug_Racer (Seb) from Euro Automotive. He's probably your best bet. He loves the bloody things haha.

    You can get some good gains from NA head flowing on a VR6.

    Depends on your budget and whether you want it finished this century as to where youd take it I reckon.

    I know an American bloke that can flow one pretty well for you.

    You do realize the work involved in taking off the head of a VR6 and that the engine and gearbox need to come out and into lots of pieces right??

    Hi Everyone,

    I'm not expecting any huge gains just hoping to get somewhere near 200hp at the wheels once the cams are done and i put on a better exhaust and inlet manifold. Who is this American guy you speak of golf loon? Do you have a contact number or email you could pm me? Thanks. I'm well aware of whats involved with pulling off the head. Although as far as i'm aware the gearbox doesn't need to come out unless you wanna change the chains and guides which i'll do once the clutch is due.

    I'll keep you posted. My main concern was that the valves may be too large. has anyone here had a good play on a flow bench with one of these heads?

    How are you gonna take the head off without taking off the chains??
    A Vr6 is a unique motor.

    You dont need to srip down the flywheel end of the motor you simply remove the cam gears from the cams and strap the chains up tight with some good nylon string so the chain cannot drop off the bottom gears. Bit figity but beats pulling the box out. Have you had the head off a VR before?

    That's a fairly audacious question from someone with a total of 5 posts on this forum to a respected member who has countless years of experience repairing and rebuilding VWs.

    Actually dont shoot the guy down so harshly. Ive read a few builds with people carefully taking care that the chains dont come loose and leaving the gearbox in. So it is possible.. But you'd wanna get it right.

    I didn't intend to shoot the guy down, simply making the point that the question was out of line in light of Golf Loons experience vis a vis the limited experience expressed by the OP.

    I don't doubt that it may be possible to remove the head and support the timing chain, I recall doing something similar with my Datsun 1600 half a lifetime ago using a piece of timber as a wedge to hold the chain and Golf Loon did offer the OP to call him and he would "give him some options".

    No big deal really.
