    VR6 Exhaust

Was wondering if anyone has cut the suitcase out of their stock exhaust, from what i hear/read if you cut it out and weld in a straight pipe for the join you get a decent note.

if anyone has done this, do u remember the measurements for the pipe?

im not looking to put much money into my 6 so was just wondering about the easiest way to get some good sound.

Also, has anyone on here got a straight through pipe?

Mine use to have the suitcase delete. Sounds good, especially for the price. Now have a 2.5" 2 res with just the rear muffler sounds awesom but can get a little annoying (the 9 hour drive to Melbourne)

the "best" performance mod on these are to remove the suitcase and run factory size exhaust pipe.
It sounds good with above mentioned mod, BEWARE - it gets boomy in the car. I did this mod on one of my previous VR6's.

I almost lasted a day, and back in it went. It's too long ago, but they will need to bend a pipe up to replace the suitcase, Just make sure the expand or compress then ends of the pipe, so you can utilize the original VW exhaust clamps.

This way if you don't like it jump under the car, loosen a few bolts pop it out and replace original part.
The Suitcase muffler also weights in around 12-14kgs. Pretty heavy.

If you want to maintain OEM (original equipped machine) like exhaust, replace the CAT and centre resonator with a straight pipe.
I found that a nice mod, after a few weeks of enjoyment. When the car is cold the exhaust will sound a little rattly. As soon as it's warm it sounds really good.

I eventually went on to, finding a MK3 Rear REMUS back box only with the CAT-centre resonator delete pipe (still plug and play no welding). This by far was the nicest sound I ever had from any of my 5 vr6's. It was quiet and then growled when the go-go pedal was pushed.

Also I experimented with panel replacement filters and pod filters, there is about 2-3kw at the wheel difference between the two.
Again the sound from the POD style filter was so much fun, ultimately I found by leaving the original airbox with a non oil based panel filter, then removing the the air trumpet from the top of the airbox and the bottom half of the airbox a great compromise.

My final result was from 103kw's (stock) at the front wheels to 113kw's (above mentioned mods) at the wheels. It still sounded great when you have your foot down, but completely silent otherwise.

I had a friend a few years ago also with a VR6. He had a custom 2 1/4" (don't think it was 2.5") system running a Viper Foam style POD filter. No airbox or blank off from the engine. That made 118.9kw's at the front wheels.

So there are some good gains to be had from Stock. But money spent vs return. I found my mods far cheaper on the wallet and was close enough.

I have done the Airbox mod on my current VR6, still running completely stock exhaust, currently scouring the forums in AUS, UK, USA, NZ to find another REMUS rear muffler.

Hope this helps you some what or anyone else with their VR6

i did the suitcase delete also.

    super boomy, but sounded awesome!

i then fitted some extractors and a 2.5 exhaust. sounded as good as the delete minus the boom.

i then fitted a pod filter, heatshield and a cold air intake and it sounded better again.

all you can hear is exhaust noise from 0-3500rpm, then over 3500 is all induction.

if you do the delete, flange it and maybe chat to Ben J on the forums about his CAI.

my spare car has no suitcase and no back muffler and it sounds HORN! and rather illegal at what i guess is about 110-115 db.
