Awesome vids! thanks heaps for this man!
My suitcase delete didn't drone except for a very small range of rpm (like a 200 rpm zone of drone) when under heavy load (climbing up hills etc). It sounded brilliant. Doing the "swiss cheese" air box mod makes a great noise too, you basically just cut up the bottom bit of the air box. I put a K&N panel filter in and swapped it to a stock paper filter and felt/heard no difference, so sold the K&N, the panel filter isn't much better than a clean stock one so that is money best spent elsewhere. Shortly before crashing my vr I put a cold air intake on and that sounded ****ing amazing. Have it sitting around, wouldn't be after much money for it, you do have to move/delete the charcoal canister to run it though.
I took asort of before/after video the day I did the intake and exhaust (although obviously you can only hear the exhaust)
Also have this video which I took to show a problem I was having with my tacho (as much as I'd love to say it really was revving to 10000, it was just doing something strange) but you can kind of hear how it sounded in the car (its just a dodgy video from an old phone though)
Awesome vids! thanks heaps for this man!
Some thrashing you did in the second one near the end! vvvvvvt tt t t t t
Yeah I know, shame on me :/ In my defence, the tacho wasn't working so I didn't know how high the revs actually were, and I was only like 17 or so at the time![]()
A lot of effort has been spent by VW to reduce cabin drone. If you look underneath the cat is huge as is the resonator. Changing the suitcase muffler is just going to increase cabin noise, and IMO make for a more unpleasant drive. I've installed a REMUS exhaust which was pricey but looks great, gives good performance and sounds nice. I've since installed a K&N air filter, cut out half the standard air box and it's sounding even better but losing low end power. Next will be to replace the suitcase muffler with a specific part that has a larger pipe running through it increasing flow but keeping cabin noise down. I wouldn't suggest going anything above 2.25" either for a VR6 (from reading, not experience I might add), not that it matters too much as there's not much piping running underneath considering there's a cat, res, and then 2 mufflers all under a short underside!
Anyone had any luck with increasing low end torque for a cheap outlay?
OEM = Original equipment manufacturer, not machine. Wouldn't normally correct that, but this is a VW forum, spirit of the Germans...
Suitcase delete sounds decent, very nice mid revs under load. BUT I find it a tad droney at motorway speeds and a bit farty around carpark speed, I'd choose a replacement more free flowing middle muffler and a different back box.... although thats what I did (cheers Ki11z) and it's louder than just a suitcase delete.
Ben of all the mounts that come with a go pro... you're the worst one.![]()

Ben : With all the induction muds and suitacases did you have a chance to check the performance ? OR was it mainly all the sound ?
I'm thinking of doing something similar like you guys said but the last thing i want to lose is low end torque. So far i'm thinking that the CAI and maybe the extractors changed for better performance.
I think people miss the main key of driving in comfort but lately it seems that everyone wants a better sounding car to justify it though. Each to their own. haha.
Build and learn, not buy and earn.
Removing the suitcase is basically all for noise. Might flow a little better but the power gain is probably negligible, it does remove like 15kg of weight though. Really have to go for a full aftermarket exhaust for power gains, a good mandrel bent 2.5inch system will see some decent gains. There isnt much to be gained from putting on extractors, as far as I know thete is only one set you can buy that actually makes power, theyre expensive with tuned length pipes and such, the cheap hottuning ones just make some more noise, mighy actually lose a little power even. Porting the stock exhaust manifolds and having the downpipe backwelded and porting that too gets more gains than most extractors, I did this too and it was definitely worth while.
I never dyno tested anything but definitely didn't lose power. The cold air intake seemed to make a bit of a difference but it was probably more in the mind then anything, as it definitely sounded faster! On a heavily modified motor the exhaust and intake mods might make more of a difference, but on a relatively stock engine they don't do a whole lot more than make it sound nicer.
These vr6 motors make one of the nicest noises of any engine in the world in my opinion, especially when they have some intake and exhaust mods, so I believe its well worth doing, even if it is just for sound. Making the engine breath easier can't hurt anything if you do it right, but wont make massive power differences until you've fixed the more restrictive parts (such as the head, which is the biggest problem on these motors)

I'm leaning towards straight piping it from the suitcase.. any issues with this? apart from noise cause that what i want.
I vote straight pipe from cat with 2 resonators and a rear muffler but I like the sound of mine.
