So apparently VR6 engines didn't have a number stamped into them from the factory, only if a dealer fitted/refitted an engine.
Do I smell bull****? Or is this legitimate?
I couldn't locate the number on my cars block today.
There's a spot for it where the serpentine belt tensioner pulley is - no number there.
It's supposed to be on the front of the block under the intake manifold, near the gearbox? - no number there either.
So I don't know what to believe.
Anybody care to shed some light?
Thanks guys.
Ps: I know the number is on the sticker the rocker cover, but I need one for rego purposes.

interesting
I have 3 VR6 engines here and it appears that there are two separate block castings. One of the 3 engines has the number located in the position above. The other two do not even have that blank section for the number to be stamped on. Ill have to have a closer look at one of them tomorrow to see if no-one else can come up with an answer.
Late VR6s have it where that picture is. Early ones have it stamped on the top of the block.
It is visible if you stand on the passenger side of the car and look below the coilpack at the bit of the block that sticks out from under the head. It should be AAA 0 235 258 or AAA 123 567. It seems to depend on the bloke doing the inspection and the state it is registered in whether the 0 is used in the number or not. I have seen both.
Hope that helps.

ahh here we go
On vehicles from 08.94 the engine number ("Code letters" and "Serial number") can be found on the left side of the engine behind the cylinder head cover on the cylinder block.

I just went and looked and the other two have the number stamped on them in the above location.
Thanks for the quick replies guys!
Matt, is one of those the number for the engine you sent me?
Started asking around for metal stamps already... Lucky I asked here!
Thanks again guys.

If for whatever reason my block didn't have a stamped number, VicRoads would've issued me a totally new one and I'd have to have it stamped in.
