    VR6 Dying on me

Hey all, wondering if someone can help me? I have a problem with my VR6, occasionally all the power dies and it returns to idle.
This problem can usually be induced on one particularly bumpy section of road when I have my foot planted. The revs simply die to about 600RPM; a prod of the throttle reluctantly builds the revs to about 1000RPM then it dies again to 600RPM. A prolonged push of the pedal will stall it.
After this happens I'm forced to pull the car over to the side of the road, still idling. While stationary I've tried building the revs slowly and smoothly and it does so until about 3000RPM then it dies sharply - this happened repeatedly.
If I drive off slowly and smoothly its ok but as soon as I put in half or full throttle it just about throws me out the front windscreen. The car will continue acting this way for the rest of the day. The next day it will be right as rain again until the next time I drive over the section of road.

It seems like it could be a Fuel/Air mix problem but it seems odd to only happen under one particular circumstance.

Anyone know of this type of problem?

    Sorry to hear about this.

First port of call should be a VAG-COM or V-Checker scan.

This should reveal any errors the ECU has logged and give some clues about what is going wrong.

What you're describing could happen with a failing lambda (oxygen) sensor, but then similar symptoms could come up the sensor has a bad ground or if you have a bad vacuum leak.

Check this thread - maybe a local forum member can help you with a scan:

Seems like an issue similar to mine that I'm having at the moment - and I'm putting mine down to either too much fuel, or bad sensors (engine speed or O2 sensors).

could be your MAF not registering properly if its clogged or theres an air leak

between it and the throttle body which would cause the wrong amount of

fuel to be injected...you can gently clean it with carby cleaner but dont try

to scrub it or wipe it inside.

    maybe not..??

air filter might be struggling to suck large amounts of air through if its

clogged up with oil and grit? if it's a K&N filter they need cleaning more often

    than the standard filters...

    just my thoughts..

could be the air filter how long sinces it been changed

or a vacuum leak or the throttle cable worn or torn and causing it to jam

Just my Two cents and all, bud Dad had a similar problem with his Alfa.

    We changed all vaccum hoses,
    Lamda probe,
    Air Flow Meter,
Air Filter, He had some stupid Cone type K&N filter that the previos bloke had put on there, and was stupid. It reduces air intake and ****t the whole thing up. (Ironicly once we changed that back to standard, the thing ran really well)
Had the timing set up twice. (For some reason the timing wasnt actually in sync with the timing marks....and the timing marks were out somehow

The other thing that i kept saying to him to check is the computer, and earthing, becuase everytime he hit a bump it was moving the cables (in our case on the computer) and that was playing games with the rest of the car. But i suppose as said before, get someone to have a look at it with the computer vag thing, that should show the error's
