    VR6 cutting out

    Hey all,

I have an issue with my VR6 cutting out and was wondering if anyone could shed some light on the situation. Just recently when I have been going to take off or accelerate on a hill or incline, the engine wants to die back to idle, thus resulting in rather embarrasing bunny hopping. Once recently with my nanna in the car. If I put the car in neutral and let the engine drop back to idle straight after it has done it, then try to rev it, it doesn't respond. It sometimes results in the engine dying. Yet, if I turn the car off and then back on straight away it comes good again, until the next hill. Can anyone pin point this issue? I am suspecting bad fuel pick from either a blockage or dying fuel pump???

    Any help appreciated, Cheers

The fact it clears after you turn the car off says to me that you are going into limp mode. It sounds like an air leak on the intake or a faulty sensor (MAF possibly). I'd get it scanned with VAG-COM.

Have you done any mods recently?

Put a pod filter on it, but it has been running fine with it on for the last few months. Seems odd that it only happens up hills though - doesn't do it on a flat piece of road. Shall have a close inspection around the old school '93 VR6MAF sensor area though.

Have you nailed it on a staight? If it only happens going up hill, it may just be the way gravity is doing it's part on the piece where the leak is. Worth exploring...

Failing that, I would happily recommend a visit to James at Audvolks in Clayton Sth. He is with out a doubt the most impresive and dedicated mechanic I have ever meet! (free plug for doing such a good job previously with my car).

Something similar has happened to me. The other morning when i drove home from a mate's place it actually just turned off on me at a set of lights!! I had to keep the revs up because if the engine was idle when i turned it back on it would turn off on me again...very weird..i revved it and it turned off. Anyway that cutting out problem might mean it's worth checking your coilpack? There's been at least three threads started with similar problems and each time people mention coilpack or leads etc. I've gotta get my electrics/air parts checked soon as well

I used to encounter this exact same issue with my 6N Polo. Turned out it was a dud water temp sensor. Used to hop down hills like crazy..Easy fix. Definitely get it scanned.
