    VR6 Air filter

Gday guys, first post, thanks for having me here...

Well my BMW dropped its tranny so it had to go and mum just bght a new Polo GTi....since i dont have a car I thought Id indefinately borrow her old Golf VR6 rather than trade it in! score!

I love this old golf, i learnt to drive in it 10 years ago and it evokes fond teenage memories every time i drive it now.

One of those (fun but foolish) memories was the AWSOME NOISE this motor made when we would (rather stupidly) rip the air filter out of the box and ring the little 6 potter's nuts off!!

I want that noise back! im not particularly worried about hp gains, just want to have a little fun.....

My question is: How easy is it do install a pod filter on these cars? is it just a matter of buying a pod and hose clamping it on or is there an issue with the AFM etc? Im on a tight budget here too BTW.

Your help is appreciated, great site guys! cheers!

Yes you can do that but you will be creating a warm air intake...as opposed to the cold air intake through the airbox. First thing to do if you haven't already is to 'de-cone' the airbox. Removing the plastic cone will give a deeper sound on acceleration and possibly increase responsiveness at the expense of smoothness and theoretic loss of laminar flow through the MAF sensor.

You could make a CAI by making a shroud around the pod filter. Make a cardboard one first then get some aluminium sheet and away you go. I've seen it done on other cars and it works ok.

I've run a pod all year because I'm an idiot haha. No problems though..

When I can be bothered I'm going to re-locate my pod to underneath the engine bay....ie where the lower air duct is. You can just buy some pipe from bunnings, cut and connect it to fit and away you go.

You got it mate, that's all it is. To tell you the truth, I think my pod has POSSIBLY done a little bit of damage to my engine in its performance being in the setup it is. I would recommend a lower intake pod (make more pipe so it's away from the engine, ie below engine bay) if you're worried about it.

Depending on just how tight a budget we are talking, this thread shows my build when I put in a Cold Air Intake:
    http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newf...ad.php?t=11822

If you check out the before photo:

I had a $25 pod from AutoBarn + a couple of clamps, an extension and a rubber connector, all up I probably spent $50 or so getting the pod in. Held in place with the goold old fashioned cable tie setup

As for warm air vs cold air... I never had stock so can't comment on that, but I can't say that I noticed a realy difference, although at least now it's "legal" with the cold air intake:

Check out the build thread for full details.

I'd also strongly recommend that you run a heat shield with your pod. Me and father made a custom one which I have since retrofitted for my VR6 from my GL as seen in the picture below.
